Despite the fanfare surrounding US President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Finland and Sweden joining NATO, the fate of the Nordic countries’ applications remains to be seen. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to veto the bids, slamming the applicants as hosts of “terrorist centers” contrary to a security alliance.

As Finland and Sweden seek approval from NATO’s 30 member-states, questions and concerns have arisen about Ukraine being afforded a similar opportunity within the coming years in an effort to expand the alliance’s influence amid heightened regional tensions with Russia, which has been vocal about its security needs.

During the most recent iteration of the semi-annual Munk Debates, Harvard international affairs professor Stephen Walt highlighted that throughout 2021, the US was cheerleading for Ukraine to join NATO, despite Russia’s longstanding opposition to NATO expansion.

“So our diplomats are lying?” Walt asked.
“Yes. Yes! That’s the real world, guys! Come on,” McFaul said, waving his hands for emphasis. “That’s the real world.”

in the late-breaking news topic, an opinion.

I am pi%%ed about this. Livid. Ukraine has been destroyed for decades because Zelensky believed our diplomats, with ten million or so refugees – probably 20 to 25 percent of the population of the country.

And unlike most in the West, I have family and friends who are directly affected by this.

I was just talking with a friend from Kharkiv yesterday – she was talking about a family member whose company owner moved the company from Donetsk after the start of the civil war to Kharkiv, and recently managed to move the company from Kharkiv to Kyiv again. All because of the civil war from Obama/Biden and with major funding from Biden.

“We stand with Ukraine” has nothing to do with Ukrainians. It’s just a plot of land next to Russia for them.

responsible for destroying US – Russian relations and I have never understood why.  This NYT article explains some of the mystery.

Toward the end of the ambassador’s second full day at work, a commentator on state-controlled Channel 1 suggested during a prime-time newscast that Mr. McFaul was sent to Moscow to foment revolution. A columnist for the newspaper Izvestia chimed in the next day, saying his appointment signaled a return to the 18th century, when “an ambassador’s participation in intrigues and court conspiracies was ordinary business.”

Nine months later, the Kremlin has been shaken by protests challenging Mr. Putin, who hopes to win a third term as president in the election on March 4. In this tense environment, state-run media have swung their attention to Mr. McFaul’s earlier career — as a political scientist who specialized in revolution and democracy-building. In a 2007 article in the magazine The American Interest, he wrote that “even while working closely with Putin on matters of mutual interest, Western leaders must recommit to the objective of creating the conditions for a democratic leader to emerge in the long term.”

It’s very interesting that he resigned his ambassadorship February 4, 2014 just prior to the Maidan.

Likely it’s because they have little choice or are in on the action.

The West is that movie producer. Ukraine is that young girl. She’s around 12 in the book, according to one commenter, I don’t remember.

In the expanded version the disturbing scene is shown. I don’t know who we can say is to correspond to the mother. So many sociopathic politicians to choose from.
