…If it can be summed up, then, the Democratic “mood” is basically this: “We like Bernie. He’s a warrior. But we’re afraid if we nominate him, he’ll lose in the fall. We need someone to get the job done.”

If the two men who might be that someone — former vice president Joe Biden and former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg — lose to Sanders in Iowa and New Hampshire, that would make their “electability” somewhat less convincing. Defeat can be contagious. There are not many voters who say: “I like him — he loses a lot.”

So it’s Bernie’s moment, which has sent a wave of panic through the Democratic ecosystem. It’s like waking up from a nightmare, only to realize that you’re waking up in a nightmare.

Which helps explain why Democrats across the country will soon find themselves with a newfound appreciation for the virtues of one Mike Bloomberg, former Republican mayor of New York and billionaire founder of a financial data services empire. He might not have been exactly what they had in mind, but by Super Tuesday he’ll look like Brad Pitt.

Coming from Dubya’s first cousin no less. Oh yeah, I trust this guy implicitly!

Ellis’s father was Alexander (Sandy) Ellis, an insurance executive in Boston, who studied at Yale University. His mother is Nancy Walker Bush Ellis, a sister of former President George H. W. Bush. Both Alexander Ellis and George Bush were members of Skull and Bones at Yale.

On the night of the 2000 U.S. presidential election Ellis was working as a consultant for Fox News, where he analyzed data from the Voter News Service. According to an interview Ellis gave to Jane Mayer of The New Yorker magazine in 2000, he was responsible for Fox News’s decisions in calling states for Gore or Bush based on statistical results from the VNS data. Fox News was the first (at 2:16 am ET) to call Florida for Bush. Ellis also admitted sharing exit-poll data with his cousins by phone. After the interview was published, Fox News Vice President John Moody admitted that Ellis had broken rules by sharing the data and said he was considering disciplinary action.

@rufustfirefly So the Bezos Post is using a Republican, and not just any Republican but a Bush Republican, to tell Democrats not to vote for Bernie in the primary. Of course the paper probably doesn’t say that, but you did(I’m blocked by their pay wall). Thanks for the info.

@ohiobarbarian This is all they say about the writer:
John Ellis is a former political columnist for the Boston Globe and the editor of News Items, a daily online newsletter.

Somehow I don’t think Brad Pitt is going to like being compared to an oligarch.
