After hanging around various forums that are frequented by right-wingers, I have come to summarize their mindset as follows. Feel free to add your own comments.

“I’m an Old Testament Christian—the New Testament’s just a bunch of namby-pamby crap.”

“I’m against sex education in school and against abortion—if a teenage girl gets pregnant, it’s her own fault—even if the father is a relative. And don’t expect me to support her kid! But if someone gets my girl pregnant, they’re gonna say hi to my Smith and Wesson!!”

“I’m a self-made man and don’t need government assistance! Forget the fact that I attended public schools and a state university or vo-tech school, supported by taxpayers! And don’t any of you commie socialists touch my Medicare!”

“Libtards are hateful nimrods! Gawd, I hate libtards!”

“The liberal media is all controlled by Dummicrats! Only FOX, owned by a company that specializes in fantasy parks and movies, speaks the gospel truth!”

“Everyone in the USA has the same opportunities, whether it’s someone who was born into poverty in a slum or some white guy who inherited $400 million from his father and attended exclusive private schools.”

“Socialized medicine doesn’t work! Just look at Venezuela! But don’t look at Western Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and lots of other places!”

“I know what the world is like! I’ve been to Nashville and Branson!”

“If you’re unemployed, it’s because you’re a lazy bum looking for a handout! Forget about the 11% unemployment rate—that’s FAKE NEWS! And besides, the local poultry plants are HIRING! Just don’t be a wuss and wear a mask to work!”

“Would I take a minimum wage job in Watts? No way! But I’m not the one complaining about not having a job!”

“The only thing the government should do is support the military. Forget that part of the Constitution about “promoting the general WELFARE”! They were all drunk when they wrote that!”

“There’s a new spirit abroad in the land. The old days of ‘grab and greed’ are on their way out. We’re beginning to think of what we owe the other fellow, not just what we’re compelled to give him. The time’s coming… when we shan’t be able to fill our bellies in comfort while others go hungry, sleep in warm beds while others shiver in the cold.... And God willing, we’ll live to see that day…” Basil Rathbone,"Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" (Universal 1943)

I don’t understand their minds, especially Russiagaters.

To be fair, I have known a few republicans who were actually reasonable, intelligent people – I learned a lot from them.  Most of them were older than most of today’s living republicans though.  No… since the whole Karl Rove nonsense started (and, really, since the Powell memo) they have gone all the way off the deep end.  Believe it or not, in the time of Nixon there was still a fair number of what you might have once called “liberal republicans”.  A few during Reagan’s… none now, so far as I know.  The Bush administration did a lot of damage there – as did the weak response from the democrats overall.  Of course, there is a lot more to it, most of which involves financial corruption and crimes of war, but…

I do think it is sad that the one time party of Lincoln is what it is today.  I am not much more fond of the democrats of this time though – with only a few exceptions.  I like what little I know about Kennedy – and I would have loved FDR.  The last holdouts from the bygone era of somewhat more sanity were John McCain and Ted Kennedy – though McCain did get a lot more conservative towards the end – when he was running for President.  I was sad for both of their deaths.  Neither were perfect, but both had the ability to actually reach across the aisle to negotiate social and economic issues – and not just military ones.  A few decades ago, none of this corporate bailout bull shit would have happened.

My Grandfathers were republicans – and good men – and I am not half the man either of them were.  Their kind are mostly gone, though I see a glimmer of them in a few of the posters here.

Honestly… I am disgusted by both parties of today.  I do not know though, that there is a viable alternative, or that there will be for a long time to come.  Perhaps after the hunger, the evictions, the cold winters… I do not know.  My Grandfathers generation would have torched the white house by this point, I think.

I know a lot of right-wingers. It all boils down to liberals want to take my hard earned money and give it to people who are less deserving.

But when they’re anonymous on the Internet, they’ll throw out a lot more reasons.

The teaching of Grandma’s mother tongue was prohibited when she was in high school, during the Wilson administration.

Grandpa chased after Pancho Villa with General Pershing and was a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion.

They lived in Arkansas when Arkansas Democrats were very segregationist.

They supported a progressive Republican governor of Arkansas (Winthrop Rockefeller) who wanted to change Arkansas’s reputation as a redneck hillbilly state.

That was 50+ years ago. Before she passed, my mom told me that her parents would have been disgusted with what the Republican Party has become since then.

I came across a typical unhinged Republican rant tonight on a FB page for people who grew up in my area of So Cal. The gist of it was that Libtards hate America, California is in the toilet thanks to Libtards, and the state is being “overrun” by non whites. The moderator cut off comments but left the post, which generated considerable agreement.
