Well, he kind of handed this one to them. It can’t even be called a smear because it is accurate, and not a distortion of what he is advocating for. Of course, they will use the worst examples to make him appear sympathetic to terrorists or whatever. It couldn’t possibly be otherwise. I just hope this doesn’t snowball into a big deal in the long term.
While it’s a very unpopular opinion, I think Bernie made a mistake with this one, even if I’m not vehemently opposed to the idea personally. This is just throwing stones in your path.

Seems to me that he did what he always does, stood on principle for what is right. That is after all, aside from his policies, his single biggest selling point, that he’s always been consistent. Yeah, it was clearly a rhetorical trap and he walked right into it, but if he changed his position every time someone laid a trap for him, he’d just be another no-principle-having piece of shit politician. Right? I mean what happens when the establishment challenges Medicare for All with “So you’re saying you want Charles Manson to have the same Medicare my dear old mother does?” and the headlines read “Sanders Wants Better Healthcare for Charles Manson”? Hang tough, friend. People see through this BS and it is all part of what is to be expected at this stage of the fight.

What a “loser” issue to push at this time! It puts all the IMPORTANT issues in Bernie’s platform in jeopardy.

Bernie’s not pushing it, the Vichy Dems and Republicans are. It’s a lose-lose for him. If he changes his position, then he’s smeared as a flip-flopper, which puts into question whether he is truly committed to all the IMPORTANT issues he is for. If he sticks to his guns, he’s smeared for wanting to give murderers and rapists the right to vote. So what’s the best strategic move?
It’s maintain the position he honestly believes in, and it’s a logically sound one. It’s also just one issue, and really not all that important to most voters. People who want Medicare-for-All, free college, infrastructure investment, the Green New Deal, and just an honest man in the White House will overlook it if they disagree with him on enfranchising convicts. The ones who cry the loudest about it wouldn’t vote for him anyway.

“So what’s the best strategic move?”
At this point the damage is already done. If Bernie changes his mind, he’ll be accused of flip flopping. If he stays the course, he’ll be accused of being soft on violent criminals.
I will say nothing more of this issue until the election or until Bernie is cheated out of the nomination…. again.

Could that little prick even vote in the first place? I don’t believe he’s a US citizen. But then of course that would lead the Republicans (and probably the PUMAs) to expand the lie and claim that Bernie wants “illegul forreiners” to vote as well.

Not giving every citizen the right to vote is the path to dictatorship.
The government only needs to put a large percentage of would be voters in jail, particularly ones of a demographic likely to vote them out of power, and then rest assured that the remaining population will vote them back in.
Oh wait. That is already happening.
