Benny Johnson took to the stage at the convention center in Palm Beach, Florida, before an audience of cheering young Trump supporters in December to lead a session titled “How to Own the Libs.”

“I ask myself every day: How do we own the libs?” said Johnson, at the time a reporter for the right-wing Daily Caller. “How do we do it in a way that makes a difference? Because these people deserved to be wrecked.”

According to Johnson, the answer to that question is memes. These bits of humor or political propaganda—generally images overlaid with a caption designed to go viral—are best known for littering social media, but some experts think they might have helped elect Donald Trump president. Or as notorious internet troll Chuck Johnson has said, “We memed the president into existence.”

Following that unexpected meme-driven success, well-funded conservative groups are making a more organized push to train young internet-savvy right-wingers in the art of meme-making, enlisting a growing army in what they see as the coming meme war of 2020. Turning Point USA, the conservative campus group that organized the conference, is merely one of these organizations seeking to sway hearts, minds, and elections via meme trainings. And it’s clear that when it comes to political memes, the left—which has never taken them very seriously—is trailing the right badly, and falling even farther behind.

What do they mean “the left can’t meme?” I see good memes from the left all the time right here, especially from @n2doc .

Projection. Right wingers specialize in that.  At least judging by Reddit (where I source my memes), the left just stomps the Right in meme quality and quantity. Right-wing memes tend to be either really stupid, really mean, straight out lying, or incomprehensible logic fails. Sometimes all at once.

          Exactly correct on all counts!

The very concept of MEME is anathema to the hierarchical right-wing mind… They SEE memes, they memorize the shape, but they fail to grasp the CONCEPT. And when they try to duplicate the process, their mental filters produce results that are nothing but a naked display of their predjuces and ignorance.

A right-wing fascist trying to construct a meme is a recipe for FAIL. Like a Pacific-island cargo cult building a full scale airplane from bundled straw and palm fronds.

And you will NEVER make them understand why it ain’t ever gonna fly. Sad. 🙁

The problem is that the memes the left put out usually require thinking skills, education etc. The rights not so much. My neighbors most of who are college educated but younger than 50 can not even show you where Mexico is. One won a company trip to the Dominican Republic as asked me, if that is off the coast of California or closer to New York? Non can point out where Arkansas is on the map.

The lefts Memes and texts just fly right over their heads. One thing I noticed is most spell phonetically. Do you no what I maine? I think I do know. I get a headache when I get a text from them. The text would really be by anyone over 40 or so : Do you know what I mean? I think I do now.

He said the Conservatives “memed the president into existence”.

And all along I thought it was the Russians.

R-wing ‘memes’ sure leave me cold: ‘means’ is a better label.

Or I view YTube videos labeled e.g. ‘Jordon Peterson DESTROYS/WRECKS (liberal)’ hoping to see some serious argument & wrecking & they’re never anything.  The liberal in question is some schoolgirl, and the ‘wrecking’ is hardly epic, just the same old BS I’ve been hearing all my life.

        or even right-vs.-right conflicts:

Sam Harris: “Islamic terrorism” *massive cheering*

        Rand Paul: “Operation Cyclone”

Sam Harris: *mad babbling of what was once a man*

Both sides can meme.  Issue is, both tend to say “We Win”, but it takes a while to figure it out from reality’s results.

Meh, it’s just teams talking sh-it, so I say have at it.  Have your fun.

Pretty much. Besides, it’s kind of impossible to measure real world results so everyone will declare victory regardless. I’m skeptical about the idea that the “meme wars” have much consequence in the real world. Most memes are too hyper partisan to covert anyone; they just reinforce a bias that is already there. I think it’s true to some extent that the right took the meme thing more seriously in 2016, but that’s probably because they were actually enthusiastic about their candidate. There was no grassroots enthusiasm for Hillary.

One thing kind of amusing and worth noting is that there is some overlap depending on which part of the left you identify with. A lot of the memes lambasting Hillary, Biden, etc. that progressives share originally came from the right.

@gamemeat I agree with you.  It is hyper-partisan and won’t convert any one.  Which made that Russian Collusion thing with them talking about Facebook Memes plain ridiculous.

It really is just as you said, a means to make fun, and to reinforce bias.  Anything to talk about other things than issues I guess.

Are you kidding. I am sick of the Russia memes pushed by the left for almost every single day since HERSELF lost in 2016

Never expect different result by following the previous steps

Pushed by the left? No, corporate Democrats are right wing, not left wing. Don’t fall into the Republican labeling trap of considering Hillary Clinton on the left.

Here is one roadmap which has been in the works for 48 years.

Attack of American Free Enterprise System  (The Powell Memo)

      DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION

In this 1971 memo to Eugene Sydnor at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, lawyer Lewis Franklin Powell Jr. calls for business to play a more activist role in American politics. The memo was written two months before President Nixon nominated him to the Supreme Court. The memo is credited with inspiring the founding of many conservative think tanks, including the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute and the Manhattan Institute.

      TRANSCRIPT:

This memorandum is submitted at your request as a basis for the discussion on August 24 with Mr. Booth (executive vice president) and others at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The purpose is to identify the problem, and suggest possible avenues of action for further consideration.

      Dimensions of the Attack
No thoughtful person can question that the American economic system is under broad attack. 1 This varies in scope, intensity, in the techniques employed, and in the level of visibility.

There always have been some who opposed the American system, and preferred socialism or some form of statism (communism or fascism). Also, there always have been critics of the system, whose criticism has been wholesome and constructive so long as the objective was to improve rather than to subvert or destroy.

After 48 years and millions of dollars of refining an argument, in the end there is nothing new with this agenda.

If you cannot dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit WC Fields
