The fight over “media bias” is one of the most enduring features of American politics, and one that usually never goes anywhere interesting. Conservatives say the mainstream press is unfair to them, liberals think the real problem is the press is too accommodating to conservative complaints, and round and round we go.

On Thursday morning, Politico founder John Harris managed a genuinely interesting contribution to this conversation in a piece that takes aim not only at a relatively invisible source of bias in the Washington press but also a kind of introspection on Harris’s adherence to it. It’s a source of bias that’s not left- or right-leaning in partisan terms — it predisposes DC press and political figures to view both Trump and Warren-Sanders-style Democrats unfavorably — but fundamentally establishmentarian.

“A quarter-century covering national politics has convinced me that the more pervasive force shaping coverage of Washington and elections is what might be thought of as centrist bias, flowing from reporters and sources alike,” he writes. “This bias is marked by an instinctual suspicion of anything suggesting ideological zealotry, an admiration for difference-splitting, a conviction that politics should be a tidier and more rational process than it usually is.”

Harris is one of the deans of insider Washington journalism; if the establishment has a house organ, Politico is it. Indeed, Harris explicitly discusses the ways he himself suffers from a case of centrist blinders (“I’ve got it. A pretty strong bout, actually”). He argues this bias has led people he knows in the political world to be, maybe, too harsh on Warren’s chances against Trump and, perhaps, too sanguine about the likelihood of a more centrist candidate’s victory.

If we didn’t have a “biased” media we wouldn’t have media.

Maybe they could use robots as journalists but then the question would be “how biased was the programmer?”

I don’t see that they are centrist, unless one uses their biased definition of centrism.  Support for 7 or whatever it is simultaneous wars and bases in over a hundred countries is not a centrist position.  I would agree that it is not 100% partisan; they hate anyone who favors peace.

I thought it was obvious yesterday when the media including MSNBC were overrating Bloomberg’s chances. There were several articles about Bernie’s lead in New Hampshire but none of the headlines mention it. One headline even mentions that Buttigieg is 4th but a strong fourth. TYT is doing terrific investigative reporting on Buttigieg but the MSM ignores it.

This also backs up why a reporter quit MSNBC saying networks have a Washington & Manhattan bias against the rest of the country.

      Centrism = corporatism.

Look who owns the corporate media entities, and then look at the sponsors of their programs. For example, you aren’t going to hear a fair discussion of Net Neutrality on a network owned by Scumcast (MSDNC) or AT&T (CNN) and as long as they run commercials for Big Pharma & Big Energy (neither of which are even legal in other countries) you won’t see anything critical of those industries either.

Local news used to be a somewhat more reliable source, but now Sinclair (worse than FAUX) has taken care of that. Even “liberal” TV markets like Seattle & Portland are now saturated with Sinclair propaganda TV & Fear Channel controlled radio.

Thank you for mentioning Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair has been given a pass on how many channels they own in a market by the FCC. Now they a true monopoly and rather than deal with this monster, the government (both Republicans and Democrats) kiss their corporate ass.

For the most part corporations are about money, the media is no different. As far as Trump goes, the media makes a lot of money off of this guy, just watch late night television. Everything is about what Trump did this or that day and how stupid he is. It is a Symbiotic Relationship between the media and Trump. The media acts like they oppose government and Trump get to play President. In the meantime, both the media and Trump get to make a boatload of money. Do not be fooled.

Besides, to further the point, the media has a conservative bent on their broadcasting including PBS. Below are the two openly conservative media outlets: Sinclair Broadcast Group and Gray Television Group.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has 193 Stations in 89 Markets

Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG) is a publicly traded American telecommunications conglomerate which is controlled by the family of company founder Julian Sinclair Smith. Headquartered in the Baltimore suburb of Hunt Valley, Maryland, the company is the second-largest television station operator in the United States by number of stations (after Nexstar Media Group), owning or operating a total of 193 stations across the country in over 100 markets (covering 40% of American households), many of which are located in the South and Midwest, and is the largest owner of stations affiliated with Fox and ABC. Sinclair also owns four digital multicast networks (Comet, Charge!, Stadium, and TBD), sports-oriented cable networks (Tennis Channel and Fox Sports Networks), and a streaming service (Stirr), and owns or operates four radio stations in the Pacific Northwest. Among other non-broadcast properties, Sinclair also owns the professional wrestling promotion Ring of Honor and its streaming service Honor Club.

Sinclair has faced scrutiny from some media critics, as well as some of its station employees, for the conservative slant of their stations’ news reporting and other programming decisions, and how the company’s rapid growth has aided the airing of content that supports these views. Sinclair has also faced criticism over business practices that circumvent concentration of media ownership regulations, particularly the use of local marketing agreements, accusations that the company had been currying favor with the Trump administration in order to loosen these rules and about its management lacking diversity and being totally controlled by a single family. Critics including former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather have described Sinclair’s practices as being “an assault on our democracy” by disseminating what they perceive to be Orwellian-like propaganda to its local stations.

It’s not centrism; it’s allegiance to the writers of their paychecks.

Destruction is easy; creation is hard, but more interesting.

Centrism(noun). In American politics, a packaged set of political propaganda lines whose primary purpose is to maintain the oligarchical status quo and the flow of legalized bribes to politicians, especially within the Democratic Party. Syn. see Corruption.
