The Real Attack on Free Press
Some are not going to like what I have to say here – but I think it needs to be said and often repeated.
The real attack on free press is coming…from the media. Particularly from mainstream sources like MSNBC, fox, CNN and so on. They are not only constantly peddling allegations as facts, they are also, openly and loudly… calling for censorship of any dissenting material.
This is an authoritarian’s wet dream. If this attack is successful (and so far it already has been) it will have the effect of both discrediting and censoring news media coming from independent and/or international sources.
You can see this in the attacks on “Facebook and Twitter propaganda”. Also RT and other popular left wing media. Articles posted by the Washington Post, even links to “blacklisted” sites, such as, for example: ours. JPR. No I am not kidding.
Add to this the attacks on independent shows like Jimmy Dore’s, even Thom Hartmann, Cenk, Schultz, the list goes on and continues to grow.
The elimination of net neutrality will further effect this. It will most likely throttle independent media, video and so on. Meanwhile, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google and other media giants are complicit in this, willingly censoring much media themselves to avoid bad PR.
It all began with Russiagate – and allegations that Russia used these outlets to promote their propaganda. The irony is… these same outlets promote American propaganda every day, particularly that which is sanctioned by mainstream media and state authority.
It will end (If we do not stop it) with an internet… and indeed an entire world, where some views cannot be shared. Where “real news” can only be determined by official sources, who, nonetheless, regularly lie or distort the truth to suit their own agenda.
It is like every day is Christmas for these media hacks and the corporate powers that control them. The public is being intentionally misled in order to actually destroy what free press remains.
Don’t buy into their narrative. The internet is global and ought to be free. To share thoughts, stories and ideas. To form the human coalitions that, in the future, will make the world a better place.
They are trying to destroy the last bastion of free speech and free press… and so far It is working…dlegendary1, GloriaMundi, chknltl and 47 othersbobthedrummer, WillyT, Ohio Barbarian, Pam, Blackspade, avaistheone1, snot, ChefEric, ZimInSeattle, mossyfrog, cui bono, ThinkingANew, hopemountain, travelerxxx, Cassiopeia, Shlabotnik, 3FingerBrown, Yanath, xynthee, Babel 17, canoeist52, mrdmk, Scott Crowder, Koko, leveymg, Populist Prole, Utopian Leftist, Admiral Loinpresser, glinda, JEB, 99Forever, Charles, ctsnowman, Two way street, HomerRamone, PADemD, kath, ravensong, OCMI, NV Wino, Johnny Rash, Iwalani88, jwirr, Enthusiast, duckpin, aspirant, Marym625 like this“There is no distinctly native American criminal class save Congress.” - Mark Twain

3. Oh I know plenty
In my own family who would be pissed off at the assertions I am making. Their news generally comes from mainstream sources. They buy the whole “Russian propaganda means we need censorship!” Idea.
I am sure there are others on more mainstream sites… which shall not be named, who feel the same. Take Jim Carrey’s recent attack on Facebook for not doing enough to crack down on “Russian propaganda”. This man is well liked by millions on the left… If he says it..
I think general consensus at JPR mostly agrees with my take on this, or at least worries that I am right. Others, I fear, may actually approve of the censorship if they do not look further into it.
It is a story that, I think, needs to be told. I have friends on Facebook pushing the official narrative. If I posted my own view on it, I suspect there would be enough complaints to censor this op-ed on facebook.“There is no distinctly native American criminal class save Congress.” - Mark Twain

15. Pretty much.
Anything can be labelled as fake news. Even an article promoting a better welfare system could, conceivably be called Russian/communist propaganda by some. If round one is fully successful, round two will be to attack “communist propaganda” and then “socialist propaganda”… finally ending with “liberal” and even “conservative” propaganda.
Neoliberalism is set on a path to own all information, even thought, as if such things can be genuinely owned.
I predict that, within 10 years round 2 will begin and “socialist propaganda” will become a regular term in mainstream media.“There is no distinctly native American criminal class save Congress.” - Mark Twain

Seemed like when I was still on Twitter, there was this big call for we, the little Lefties, to rush out and support the NYT, WaPo, etc. To which I said, those entities built Trump’s career. They spent decades on it. Now he’s blustering at them for show, and they’re crying about their goodness for show. It’s all just performance for bucks. NYT, WaPo, et al. can eat my shorts. And honestly I saw how *most* of the so-called “alternatives” aped them in their treatment of the Greens. So most of them, IMHO, can munch away, too. It gets tiresome as hell, being told to have the backs of entities which have never had mine, not even once.
This was not a real popular opinion of mine. (Like I’ve got any at all. LOL.) But you know, it’s pretty obvious if you lived through the 80s and have a memory which stretches back further than 10 minutes. :DWho wants art? http://www.ipernity.com/doc/327151

If I ever live on my own again, it’s Netflix and Hulu for entertainment only. I’ll continue to get my news online from people with integrity… For as long as I can.
It is not too far a stretch to go from “Russian propaganda! Censor!” To: “Left/Right propaganda! Censor!” It really isn’t. The powers that be are attempting to seize control of internet media… and it is working.

Ike was right 65 or so years ago but things have changed. As a share of GDP, manufacturing is is down to 12% and speculative finance is well over 20%. There is little industrial activity in the USA compared to finance.
With the Bezos Post getting a reported $600 million from the CIA for computer services, it’s apparent that the media – the information – is part of the ruling class establishment and people need to realize this. The media are pursuing the class interests of the owners and that’s why they function as propaganda outlets, not information outlets.

When we lived in south Texas, we read the newpapers from Mexico during the time of the Regan wars in Central America in the mid 1980’s so we could find out the truth. We had lots of neighbors that could interpret better than we could. Now the RedState is putting a stop to this:
Los Cuinis,” said John E. Smith. , the acting Office of Foreign Assets Control director.
Mr. Gonzalez Valencia, who was arrested in February and designated by Treasury as a kingpin in April, awaits extradition to face U.S. federal charges.
A Treasury spokeswoman and U.S. Embassy officials declined to provide further details on the allegations against Mr. Libien Tella.
In a statement posted on Uno Mas Uno’s website and on social media Wednesday, Mr. Libien Tella, 45 years old, denied any connection Los Cuinis and offered to cooperate with a fuller U.S. and Mexican investigation into his company and himself. He suggested that U.S. investigators were led astray by Mexican counterparts with political or financial motives to hurt himself and the family’s business.

If their attack on international media online is anything to go by… Then this is a global thing.
Example of how media in the US works… conversation between two regular people…
1: omg, did you hear the report about how our own government spies on us and collects data on, well, everything?
2: No. The media reported this? When?
1: Well, it actually came from Edward Snowden, a former government agent…
2. So, is he being thanked for revealing this? Are big heads rolling… are people going to jail?
1: Well, no… American politicians and media members are calling for his execution or assassinstion… he fled to Russia probably one step ahead of an assassin’s bullet…
2: But someone is being charged Right? I mean, this is illegal isn’t It?
1: Actually no, or I don’t think so… nothing like that is going on… hey, did you hear about what that Assange fellow did?

35. I am deeply opposed to censorship but also aware of the huge pile of bullshit
Russian propaganda that masquerades as genuine news. CNN and Fox and MSNBC are horrible–no doubt about that. But the Russian propaganda that gets regurgitated all over the internet at pretend news sites and blogs is enough to make me vomit. If you believe those sources, you might believe that Sy Hersh said that Obama conspired to smuggle sarin gas into Syria, that Assad does not use torture, that hostility to Putin’s Russia is largely a Jewish phenomenon, that the US has actually been trying to strengthen and support ISIS, etc., etc. It is sad that some members of JPR repost and so amplify some of that propaganda. But no site is perfect.
The best antidote to bad speech is not censorship, but more speech, speech that reveals the truth.
davidthegnome (2510 posts) (Reply to vattel - post #35) February 15, 2018 at 5:36 am
Basically, while we may not agree on several points, we agree about some – and about the solution. Speech. More speech. Not censorship. That said, I would hesitantly and humbly offer some advice… in general, to anyone reading.
The things that, today, may be absolute facts… tomorrow may not be. Challenge them. Dispute them yourself, examine them. Be honest with yourself about it.
If we are unwilling to challenge our principles, beliefs, even our “facts” then they are not worth much.

Of course Trump plays this up to make him look more mavericky. “He’s one of us, not one of them,” is the idea.
But it’s also why we need to get past the whole “left vs right” (artificial) constraint, and start trying to see these people more as our allies. Bernie was never afraid to speak to them (quite inclusively), and they even started to listen.

41. Can't leave the vile as fuck Sinclair Broadcasting out of the discussion.
Even folks who never watch a cable news channel (FAUX, MSNScumcast, etc) have to get their news from somewhere, and the local TV channel is usually the default choice. Except in most of the country now, those local TV stations are owned and operated by Sinclair – a company so sickeningly right wing that they make Rupert Murdoch’s gang look slightly sane, by comparison.
Worse yet, Sinclair in recent years is turning up in places where right wing media should have never been allowed to exist, and certainly wouldn’t be the choice of the viewers in those markets. Seattle & Portland, for example…. where the ABC affiliates in both cities were previously owned by a regional company called Fisher Broadcasting, which has since been swallowed up by Sinclair. The Devil doesn’t get up to Cascadia that often lately, but when I do, I have noticed the difference in the news content on those stations. Tribune media also owns TV stations in the region, and if Sinclair succeeds in their hostile takeover of Tribune, that will mean the extreme right has even more control over the news sources available in “Deep Blue Cascadia”.
Don’t expect progressive talk radio to save them either… that got thrown under the bus back in 2012 when Willard Mittens Romney took over Clear Channel and wanted revenge on those he blamed for losing the election. At least the weed is legal, and they can vote by mail.I didn't refuse to vote for Hillary Clinton because any goddamned Russian told me to. In a sick, scary kind of way. A massive, right wing conglomerate to rule them all…
A few years ago I was hired to work at a radio station up here. I didn’t realize until after I got the job, that it was a whacked out right wing station. They hired me to program the board… run all programming, produce ads, as well as manage a couple live shows.
I had no experience at all, but after a week of training, they put me in the position of “programming director”. Funny, because the only people working there were me and the manager, the guy who trained me was the former programmer.
They paid 9 dollars an hour, which at the time I thought was great. 30-35 hours a week, careful to keep me just under full time.
Anyhow, the programming was the Rush Limbaugh show, Howie Carr and Glenn Beck primarily. If I remember right.. station was WEGP 1390. AM station.
I kept trying to talk to the manager about progressive programming, to balance things out. The owner was open to it, but not willing to pay.
So, I reached out to a few progressive shows, explaining the situation. They really didn’t seem to care. Eventually I gave up trying and just kept doing my shitty, hated job… for kicks I would record Limbaugh and play him back with the helium effect. That was fun.
Long story short, manager wasn’t hitting the pavement to make sales. A new owner, millionaire who owned a couple fast food places took over – and the manager said my shitty programming skills had killed our ad sales.
So, manager took me into the office, said they needed someone with more tech training, gave me 50 bucks and sent me home. I did…. ALL of the work at that place for months, kept the station on the air with no experience and shit for training. I even voiced 90% of the ads.
It sucked, but what I remember most is thinking I could make a difference in my area if I could get some progressive shows on the air. None of the “progressive shows” were willing to help though. Not without a lot of money.
Couple years later, station sold to right wing Christian radio, shut it’s doors a year later.“There is no distinctly native American criminal class save Congress.” - Mark Twain
