      Just got a letter informing me that SSI supposedly overpaid me by 2,835 dollars, because according to the letter, I got “assisstance” with food and shelter.  I didnt though.  My only income, period, is SSI and some 18 dollars a month in food stamps.

      Now they are going to cut my benefits by an additional 78 dollars per month.  This basically means they are cutting my benefits from 783 to 460 or so.

      I cant survive on that.  No one can.  How the fuck can they do this shit to people?  I’m on hold, waiting, again, to talk to someone, again.  This time I’m going to request a hearing in addition to my appeal.

      But… I feel pretty damn defeated right now.  More depressed than I have been in a very long time.  I think I might need to check myself in to a psych ward, I really dont like the thoughts I am having.

      They do this to LOTS of people the first year after they get SSI, just to see how many won’t request a hearing on it, so they can kick them off. Request that hearing.

      How do they do that? It’s years of policy, dating all the way back to Reagan.

      Or anything else.  The only thing I can think of is that they could be using my fiance’s income and calling that “assisstance”.  I’m pretty damn confused, upset, angry and depressed.

      Just spent an hour on hold with the SSA – waiting to talk to someone.  Had to hang up because I need to go get my fiance soon to take her to a dental appointment.

      I wish I could afford a lawyer on this, but I couldn’t even pay a small retainer.

      by V.I.T.A. for this year and the last several years.  And if you did not file one, that is just fine.  they will tell you what to bring to help you fill out the forms, even if you owed the internal revenue nothing!!!  You many call them too.  What to bring is on the page below.  But the volunteers can use other paperwork instead.  You may already have Medicare paperwork for monthly healthcare for the past several years.  Go immediately; they start closing around the 6th of April, but one in your area will stay open till summer. Important: you must have an IRS PIN to get a monied refund.  V.I.T.A. can still file electronically. And you will have the correct form with you (you do not need a refund for the hearing or the Appeal).  The  IRS will send a letter saying they need a PIN before any tax refunds but that is second to what you need them for).  The IRS Return form done by V.I.T.A. will be correct.  If someone lives with you; have that person do a separate Filing.  Are you married by Common Law in your state?

      Follow the IRS page below.  Catholic Charities can help you locate these places where the tax volunteers do the work on the forms.  They live locally.  Sometimes it is a county program!!  But the IRS page below has a, Where, link on the left side.   Here is the V.I.T.A page:

      https://www.irs.gov/individuals/free-tax-return-preparation-for-you-by-volunteers

      Local example for me near where I live:

      https://www.govserv.org/US/Fort-Worth/945357508877471/VITA-United-Way-Tarrant-County

      And the places where you go, are at outreach centers where there are people that would love to help you.

      @ohiobarbarian

      I don’t know.  They did the phone interview/review thing in January and I answered a thousand questions to “do you get any income from..” With a definitive no.  I told them I pay 350 a month in rent and another 100 to help with the car.  Other than that my expenses are primarily food.

      If they asked me though, i would have told them the truth.  Technically, as i pay her rent and my own expendes, i think i qualify as my own household.  I don’t know.  I do see your point about not volunteering anything.

      I’ve always been honest about everything in this case though, because to lie about it wouis be “playing the system” as so many people say that so many people do.

      It’s all absurd anyway.  I couldn’t get by on my own even with the full amount, so maybe there is some reason to this.  Going to have to make some changes while I go through the appeal process and get that hearing.

      If what they are doing is legal, well then that’s that.  I won’t fight it if that’s the case.  I’m tired of jumping through all these God damned hoops.

      What really sinks me is knowing that a lot of people are worse off than me and this shit is happening to them, too.  We truly are governed by heartless monsters.

      David,

      Word Press said I made an error and they cut part off part of my reply.  The three links are the main thing about my reply.  The IRS forms will state your turn income!!!!  Let the V.I.T.A. help you.  Its is ok to go to the outreach center several times.

      Hi David,

      I am not expert and can only offer this: Do Not Give Up.  Follow every avenue possible to appeal this ruling – every single one.  Leave no stone unturned.  Be polite and forthright while also being FIRM.  Sending you my best.  Hang in there.

      @99thmonkey

      I will do that if the appeal doesnt work, assuming I can appeal again.  My very limited experience with lawyers has not been great – but I know their value.

      @twowaystreet

      I wasnt familiar with Vita – and Catholic Charities does a lot of good work.  I dont think there is a local office for either one where I live.  Maybe I can make a trip out of it next week when I go to the nearest social security office, roughly an hour and a half drive.  My fiance already filed, we dont co-own or lease or rent anything or have any joint accounts, so I dont think I’m an issue in her tax filings.

      @thouartthat

      Dogged persistence is what got me the disability to begin with, I will just have to roll up my sleeves and get back to it.

      Thank you all.  I didnt used to write about these things from the perspective of a person who receives aid – but now that I do it is more clear to me than ever how broken the system is.

      Expanding social security, the food stamp program and things like the earned income tax credit should all be a big focus (I hope) of the next administration.  In addition, it is damn depressing that, here in America, poverty alone is not enough to get someone some help.

      Maybe ultimately a guaranteed minimum income is the only way to go.  The disability program just isnt cutting it – and we have no standard welfare cash program like other Countries.

      The SSA, more and more, seems like just another corporation.  I wonder how long it will be before they send those jobs overseas, too.
