This coyote was stealing newspapers, so here's what the delivery man did

    February 1, 2018
    Jaymi Heimbuch

In one San Francisco neighborhood, trouble popped up for the newspaper delivery man when his papers started going missing.

He started getting calls from upset clients that their paper wasn’t being delivered, but he knew full well he had delivered one to their doorstep. Shortly after the calls began, he discovered something completely unexpected. One morning he watched as the neighborhood coyote played with a newspaper on a grassy hillside. He videoed her tossing the paper up in the air, sliding down the hillside on it, and running around with pages flapping from her mouth. It turns out she was repeatedly stealing papers off of certain porches shortly after he delivered them, just to play!

Rather than get mad, the delivery man’s solution was to throw out a paper just for her, launching it onto the grassy hillside she frequented before she had a chance to nip one from a front porch. She had her morning toy, and he stayed out of trouble with his clients.

    1. paper-man is a sad commentary on our economy

paperboy used to be a job for kids.  good way to learn discipline, responsibility and face to face customer interaction.

now it’s a job for adults

      4. My husband had a newspaper route 25 years ago…

110 miles a night over really rough paved and unpaved roads.  He would get a flat tire at least once a month.  Some stretches between deliveries were miles apart… and the papers had to be delivered before six AM.

This is not a job for kids anymore.

      6. One of the problems is that most newspapers now are morning papers

When I was a paper boy 45-50 years ago, the daily newspaper came out in the afternoon, and my route was close to my neighborhood, so I could easily deliver 50 papers in the daylight hours after school. There was no Saturday paper. The Sunday paper was the only morning paper, and I would have to get up early for that. Sunday papers were thicker, so it took longer to get everything ready and deliver those papers. But I usually made it back home in time to catch some Bullwinkle before heading off for Sunday school :)

The worst memory I have is of one very, very cold February morning when there was ice on the roads. The local paper had put out a huge 90th Anniversary of Our Town edition, and it took me two trips to deliver all the papers. Worse yet, since the roads were icy, I couldn’t ride my bicycle, so I had to walk my route with those very heavy newspapers. I didn’t have a Radio Flyer wagon, so I had to carry them in a canvas carry bag, which slipped over my head so I could carry papers on my front and back. I must have walked four miles that morning, and boy, were my toes and fingers numb! About a year later, Don McLean came out with his “American Pie” song, and every time I heard “And February made me shiver, with every paper I’d deliver…” I would always think about that cold, cold morning in February. I still do.
