Here’s my quick analysis of the abortion issue: we need to take a step back and see the big picture. Our Supreme Court as an institution is no longer a judicial body; it is a political body that is unelected and whose charge is to carry out an extreme-right agenda that primarily benefits the fossil fuel industry, corporate power, and other anti-democratic forces that are undermining fair elections and personal freedom.

Rather than rule on law, the justices are imposing laws that run counter to the wishes of the majority on almost every major issue: reproductive rights, gun rights, climate, consumer rights, Indian adoption laws. I’ll add that into this environment Chevron gets away with a private corporate prosecution of me that results in a 3-year detention for holding it accountable for massive pollution in the Amazon. Six right-wing judges on the Supreme Court are now trying to dismantle the “administrative state” which is simply code for blocking all attempts by our executive branch agencies to carry out the will of Congress on climate and other major consumer issues.

It feels like a judicial coup. Industry — via an array of groups like the Federalist Society, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the Koch Brothers funding network — are controlling our society for their narrow benefit via six judges: Gorsuch, Roberts, Kavanaugh, Coney Barrett, Thomas, and Alito. Three of them were appointed by Donald Trump after he lost a national election on the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. Our society has become deeply undemocratic.

The original purpose of the Supreme Court was to protect the people from the government. The current purpose of the Supreme Court is to protect corporate and governmental power from the people. Stop kidding yourself that the Supreme Court is a judicial body. It is not.

Six unelected judges are largely controlling the freedom and rights of over 300 million people.

This is not good for the rule of law. It is not good for democracy. It is not good for the vast majority of people in the US. The problem of the US Supreme Court must be addressed or we will lose our democracy and our planet will continue to burn.

      In solidarity,

      Steven Donziger

I do blame the Democrats. Since 1973, the Democrats have been promising everything under the sun to protect Roe vs. Wade, except codifying the ruling into law. Year after year, with the majority of Americans in favor of such a law and putting the issue to bed in the books, these politicians use it as a campaign fundraiser. Now you have a Democrat President sitting in office saying Golly Gee Wilikers, we need more money to fight this problem. It must be real work to be a gifting politician.

How does forcing women to have children they don’t want benefit these people?

This isn’t about providing cheap labor decades from now. It’s about energizing and exacerbating the culture war all while obscuring the class massacre taking place under our noses in the here and now.
In other words, the same fucking game as always. It’s not that difficult.

It gives the right a win, especially rewarding the Religious Right who’s preachers back the rethugs. Will keep them on their side. There will be other issues whipped up to keep them there.

Keeps people from noticing the really nasty crap they are doing at the court right now.

And as to extra babies, well more cheap labor for Corporate America and more bodies in the pews I imagine.

Cheap-labor conservatives oppose a woman’s right to choose. Why. Unwanted children are an economic burden that put poor women “over a barrel”, forcing them to work cheap.

They look for individual words not in the Constitution and ignore the descriptions that fit those words. Everything from the real meaning of ‘general welfare’ to the wording of the 4th Amendment.

Cheap labor or more burdens on the state? Right wingers are supposed to be against that.

Given that these “justices” are nominated by a President and confirmed (or not) by Congress, typically along party lines…

No, the institution (of the sc) is not a judicial body.  It isn’t representative of the American people and only makes a vague pretense at being “constitutional”.

It is a political tool used by whichever party happens to be in power to achieve their own agenda.  Often enough though, this institution serves to make both parties a lot of money.  Gotta keep those campaign dollars rolling in – Citizens United (more apt would be to call it idiots for oligarchs).

When this supposed “judicial institution” decided that any amount of bribery, hard money, soft money, etc. Was just fine… Well, that kinda just confirmed what we mostly already knew.  We live in an oligarchy and it’s institutions support the oligarchs, not the public.

It’s like the supremes like to decide law, using the constitution intermittently along the way.

        a) The second amendment allows states to advance on that right to carry so that we can all open carry our way back into self defense laws of the old West

        b) With no law specific to privacy between a woman and her health codified, it assures that a pathway to this right is pushed aside with the State’s trigger decisions on that privacy.
