This is barbaric. One reason I've joined the single-payer train.

    http://www.wsfa.com/story/38184070/mother-whose-son-died-rationing-insulin-questions-high-price-of-diabetes-drug

Alec Smith’s 26th birthday became a death sentence last year, as he could no longer afford to buy the insulin he needed to live, Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported. An autopsy determined he died from diabetic ketoacidosis caused by a critical shortage of insulin.

Health care seems to me to be just as important as civil defense (police) and national defense (military).

      1. I would weep, but it would do no good… This country has become depraved.

        11. Depraved is a good way to put it. Profit over life.

      2. I can only imagine…

The pain that mother must feel, or the pain her son must have felt.  What is happening here is indeed barbaric… it is… evil.  In America, we put profit over everything… even, apparently, life itself.  I’ve been on the single-payer train for some years, mostly because I went without health insurance for over a decade.

A few years back I had to go to MA to visit someone.  I needed to get a refill of my prescription for Sertraline while I was there.  At home, with various discounts/programs for the uninsured, I was able to get my medication for 36 dollars.  In a little town near Boston, the price was 300 (I suspect it had something to do with their healthcare laws and Romneycare) which I definitely couldn’t afford.  This the kind of medication (particularly on the high dose that I take) that if you suddenly stop taking it can lead to hallucinations, seizures, even death – though it is widely claimed by the drug companies that the drug is non habit forming.

I freaked out and got on the soonest bus back home, got my medication refilled and was okay, but if I had been stuck there… withdrawal… is hell, it really, really is.

The fact that this young man died after suffering so much, in a Country that is the world’s wealthiest…. such things strongly shake my faith in humanity.  There is no excuse, no justification, no reason but that of putting profit above all else.  Enough is really enough.

      3. I couldn't agree more with your statement

“Health care seems to me to be just as important as civil defense (police) and national defense (military).” I would throw education in there as well. I wonder why it is not seen as such, especially in this country? In other first world countries, even the conservative parties won’t touch the healthcare systems.

What an awful story. I wonder if the American public really knows that things like this happen?

      4. It's immoral to withhold a technology, therapy or medicine that is

available to those who need it because they cannot pay for it. I don’t understand why people can’t see this. I have known people in the past to die from curable diseases because of their inability to pay often because the disease disabled them so they couldn’t work or have health insurance. We as a nation have to change this.

      5. He was a type 1 diabetic; no diet/exercise involved there: insulin is the ONLY

      fix.  26 years old.

      yes, barbaric.

        8. Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes = body doesn't make insulin, and

typically diagnosed in kids and young people.  (Unlike type 2, insulin-resistant diabetes, usually adult-onset with weight being one of the risk factors — this is the type that can often be addressed with diet/exercise).

26 years old, working as a restaurant manager.  Had to ration his insulin cause he couldn’t afford enough.

“The most affordable health plan he could find had a deductible that still prevented him from affording his medication, so he went without, rationing his insulin.”

“Between 2002 and 2013, the price of insulin per milliliter rose by 197 percent, from $4.34 per milliliter to $12.92 per milliliter, according to a 2016 study.”

And we know why: neoliberal changes in the related law.  And here’s Eli Lilley pleading poverty:

“Eli Lilly and Co. told the Star-Tribune that even though the list price for the drug has gone up, the company is receiving less money from sales of the drug since 2009 because of rebates”

“Unlike most countries, the U.S. doesn’t limit what drug companies can charge for medicine.”

But never fear, out PRESIDENT has got it covered…in his spare time from cutting food stamps and medical care…

“President Donald Trump unveiled his (USELESS) “plan” Friday to battle high prescription drug prices in the U.S., which includes speeding up the approval process for over-the-counter medications and a requirement for drugmakers to disclose the cost of their products in TV ads. The plan didn’t include his campaign promise to allow Medicare, the largest buyer of drugs, to negotiate with drug companies directly…”

        And local legislators…

“However, in response to Smith’s death, a lawmaker on the state level took action, naming a bill in his honor to provide emergency insulin for those in need. The bill was referred to committee and will not get a vote in this legislative session, Star-Tribune said.”

And even if passed, just one more item in the poverty treadmill, with miles of red tape hurdles before one actually gets service, or insulin.

Fucking CHARITY to for a problem that KILLED a young working person who did not a goddamn thing wrong.

WHY DON’T THE SORRY FUCKS ADDRESS THE REAL ISSUES?

      6. I think that Edmund Burke would agree that sometimes, the socialist solution to

a societal problem is the conservative solution as well. This is one of those times. I wish more American conservatives thought like Burke, English aristocrat that he was.

      9. Pretty soon this will be a source of terrorism too…

Can you imagine terrorist groups paying people who are sick with some contagious disease but with no means to pay for treating it to use that disease in a destructive fashion to kill others in crowded places like on buses and trains.  There are already has been bioterrorism using anthrax in mails sent to people.  But by taking advantage of so many people not having medical coverage, terrorists could really succeed that much more in creating a nightmare situation if people get exposed to very contagious diseases in crowded places with no means of getting treated because they are the “lower caste” that rich classes seek to destroy in so many ways.  Rich people.  Are you going to TOTALLY segregate yourselves from society to avoid contact with those that will also spread disease to YOU because YOU ARE TOO DAMNED SELFISH TO PROVIDE THEM HEALTH CARE?!!!  We need single payer today to shut down a few more RICH THIEVES calling themselves “health insurance” companies!

      More on this here:

      https://thebulletin.org/why-access-health-care-national-security-issue10819

Hopefully some right wingers browsing our site will see that if they want to stop terrorism, they really need to support health care for all not encumbered by thieves to keep the risk low from terrorists screwing us over.

Vote AGAINST the race to the bottom by both corporate parties who seek to screw workers over globally!

      15. Republican, either you are a progressive or an independent

You cannot remain a Republican if you wish to talk about single payer. Republicans have attempted to repeal Obamacare, so therefore they do not have any further say on health rights.

      Now what says you?

      29. The cost to make insulin is really minimal. And the patent expired.

      So it should be cheap.

Also, the skyrocketing rates of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes is clearly caused at least in part

      (See: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=endocrine+disruptor+diabetes )

by exposure to certain kinds of man-made chemicals, endocrine disruptors,  used in many things, for example, plastics, non-stick coatings, furniture cushions and flooring, dental fillings, carpets, artificial turf, can and food packaging liners and coatings, flame retardants, thermally printed labels, plastic water bottles, and so on. They cause all kinds of changes in the body because they mimic hormones.  They can cause a lot of cancers, morbid obesity, etc. They also impact the offspring of exposed females. They change the body’s energy set points. The media doesn’t report on this but they should.

Over the years or had to wait a week or such to buy a medicine vitally needed to survive?

      I know I have.

This country shits on anyone in need of anything, you either buy it or don’t. Those are our only two options.

Free medicine is out of the question, might as well ask to stop making tanks and fighter planes.
