The lead researcher said that “this is the most powerful” methane seep he has ever seen. “No one has ever recorded anything similar.”

Scientists studying the consequences of methane emissions from underwater permafrost in the Arctic Ocean announced this week that they found a 50-square-foot area of the East Siberian Sea “boiling with methane bubbles.”
“This is the most powerful seep I have ever been able to observe,” lead scientist Igor Semiletov said Monday, using a term for methane gas bubbling up from the seafloor to the surface. “No one has ever recorded anything similar.”

Semiletov, a Russian researcher who has participated in 45 Arctic expeditions, set out on the Academic Mstislav Keldysh last month, accompanied by scientists from the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Their discovery was announced in a statement from Russia’s Tomsk Polytechnic University, where Semiletov is a professor. The researchers’ findings from the expedition and Semiletov’s remarks were translated and reported on Tuesday by The Telegraph.

    Hi zim,

Yep – the permafrost is thawing.  One wonders what part of climate change and global warming still needs to be explained?

Shit. This is bad, really bad. I don’t know exactly how bad, but I have a very dark feeling that we’re going to find out in our lifetimes. That includes boomers hoping to die before climate change really hits. Methane is a far more efficient greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Yup @ohiobarbarian @thouartthat Of every article I’ve read over the last few years about climate crisis, the methane bomb is by far the scariest. The Arctic ice melt that’s 50 years ahead of schedule is pretty dire as well. Glad I’m 58 and not 25. I envy those that are older.

        Hi zim,

Agree fully.  Climate change has become much worse far faster than all predictions.  One wonders when this will sink in with the masses and equally when will this sink in with world leadership?  Since sooner rather than later is already too late, I am expecting the worst to unfold.  And that perspective is not based out of pessimism but realism.

Insect die offs. The birds that eat them shrinking in numbers far faster than expected.

Every other article about changing planet conditions seems to begin with the phrase “Scientists shocked”.

If a meteor were headed towards earth, the government would keep it a secret for as long as possible to avoid impending chaos and social disorder. The problem is that it isn’t a meteor anymore and the suffering and death will not be as instantaneous. But…..the government is still not revealing the whole truth. The official government position is to muzzle scientists.

Meanwhile, the focus of our attention is “tit for tat” corruption allegations between the two major players in a duopoly that are absolutely correct about the corruption charges against each other.

An analogy would be being engrossed with gossiping about a disliked neighbor/Home Owners Association President, cheating on his spouse, while ignoring a surging, flooding river that is getting dangerously close to your neighborhood.
