    TOO DAMN MANY ACRONYMS!!

Jesus Christ on a cheese sandwich! Does anyone type out words anymore?

Let’s do this. Put the acronym in the title of a reply. Put what it stands for in the body of the reply.

I’ll stick this post at the top of all forums for a week. After that, it will just be stuck in the Q&A forum.

    Thank you

Edit: unstuck this because this didn’t quite go as planned. But IAG :)

Nope, no longer the Illinois Central. Sadly

        4. It could also mean

        Integrated Circuit

        Industry Canada

        Information Center

        Insurance Company

        Iowa City

        Ice Cream

        Iceland

        Ithaca College

        Independent Contractor

        International Community

        Inner Circle

        Impulse Control

        Iron City

        In Character

        International City

        Internal Communications

        Index Card

        Ignition Coil

        Iron Curtain

        Internment Camp

        Internet Commerce

        Indiana Colts

        Iroquois Confederacy

        Intercomputer Communication

        Ion Chamber

to mention a few. So get it straight folks. Tell us what your acronym is, by spelling it out (even if it’s in parentheses), then use it in your posts. But if you don’t clarify it, that acronym could mean almost anything.

(One of my word fun hobbies is making up acronyms. Try it some time.)

      2. Generally, when I am confused about acronyms

I go to http://www.acronymfinder.com and look it up. If I don’t see it there, I cite one of their acronyms, and ask the person if this is what they really meant.
I think that the increased use of acronyms is because people don’t like typing on their phones, or they have been twittering too much.

Perhaps it’s just because they are too lazy, or have not learned to type. There is one guy at work who types with one finger. I never was a great typist, but over the years, having used a computer, have learned it from doing it. I try not to use acronyms, and try to spell properly, so as not to confuse folks, and I expect the same from others. Perhaps it is too much to expect, but that’s life!

        3. I just thought this might be a handy dandy reference

There are a couple I can never remember. One, I think is “wrt.” @sabrina uses it and I’m embarrassed to ask her anymore what it means.

I worked with a guy who used one finger on each hand. He typed pretty quickly. I guess it’s whatever you’re used to.

I used to type quickly on a phone. But when they all started using the qwerty keyboard, and you have to use one hand, I slowed down

          21. Wrt means 'with regard to'. I do agree though about too many acronyms

It’s changing the language. Now the media, since they discovered the internet, uses them, and I often wonder how older people are managing to interpret what they are reading if they don’t have anyone around to help them out

                34. My Dad was a genius. Literally

It’s amazing how he could convince people his completely made up statistics were correct. Usually he was dead on or at least very close.

We were in family court once (about a cousin) and my Dad started “quoting” statistics on the stand. The opposing attorney objected that my Dad was not an expert and to strike his testimony. The judge allowed it because my father was right. :) I know he never read any studies on it.

He did the NYT crossword puzzle every week in a couple of hours. Then he would erase it all so my Mom could do it.

Sorry, missing him a lot lately

            59. Changing the language is being kind, I think.

Acronyms are – by definition – not words. They are stand-ins for words; they’ve become Gregg shorthand of the text-age. Hell, people are even using them in speech; an English professor friend of mine, utterly addicted to texting, will respond to a witticism with “LOL” even as she chuckles. It makes my skin crawl . . .

Personally, I think they are destroying the language (and I say that as someone who uses this John Nichols quote in my email signature line: “The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary”).

English is such a beautiful language, so wonderfully emotive and rich – but if we don’t use it, we will lose it.

              71. I agree, shorthand is one thing, but it's true that a lot of people are using

these acronyms as words. The English we speak today isn’t all that great to begin with, compared to say, a couple of centuries ago, but if this keeps up, in a few decade’s people look back at today’s English and probably won’t understand it.

        44. "Urban Dictionary" is where I go…

and it’s pretty good except you have to spend time with some common acronyms going down the list because there are so many that can mean anything other than the one you are trying to make sense of. It can take awhile to figure out which best fits the context of what you are looking for.  (Sorry, know that sounds garbled, but it’s the best way I could explain it)

My thought on the overuse of acronyms is that its cellphone use.  It takes so long and so much effort to type on the small keyboards that reporters and people who have to do rush communication on the road may have started to shorten everything.   Even some posters here are probably typing from work breaks or other times when acronyms are the most convenient.

Then there is “Twitter” with the character limit which is making short work of everything which is another problem in communication, these days,

For all our conveniences it seems that life just gets more complicated, these days.  :banghead:

      18. It is about time. I think people use acronyms because

      1. They are lazy. Nobody here is, or should be in that much of  hurry that they can’t make their posts reasonable clear.
      2. They think other people will think they are smart or knowledgeable. (Wrong!, it’s the opposite)
      3.  Their source doesn’t have an explanation. They have no clue either, so they don’t, can’t, won’t spell things out, for fear they might be wrong.

          33. If they had a mind to spell things out in the first place, then

there wouldn’t be a problem, as they wouldn’t be using many.
But, too many people think everyone else has the same though processes at the moment as they do, so should automatically just know what a random conglomeration of letters should mean, in any given instance. As you have noticed, reality doesn’t work that way.

Common acronyms in context, is one thing. Making them up as one goes, as many seem people to do, is another problem entirely.

                  62. We were having a discussion on the senior board

about language.  The gaps in folks understanding contemporary expressions from one generation to another in its use and in slang especially.  Interesting about these abbreviations and anagrams, we have just had a whole slew of new ones added with our technological changes.

Think of how our generation, if you’re over 50 let’s say, would recognize ones like SNAFU and/or FUBAR but younger folks wouldn’t necessarily know them.

I listed a bunch of expressions from the 60’s that have been mainstreamed, not anagrams or abbreviations, but just words, like ‘bitchin, heavy, freak out, bummer, blissed out, etc., that more or less have achieved mainstream society and may be here to stay.  Most could recall these easily.

PDQ, ASAP, and SOL are readily apparent to almost all folks now.  Language is always changing isn’t it?

          77. Be thankful you've never worked for NASA or its contractors.

I was told when I did work for some of them that there are acronyms called “double-nested” where it’s an acronym made up of other acronyms. People then had an unofficial contest going on to see how many triple-nested acronyms were out there (an acronym made of double-nested acronyms.)

You really have to keep a handbook of acronyms when working for NASA or the military ;)

"You! Cake or death?" "Uh, cake for me, too, please." "Very well! Give him cake, too! We're gonna run out of cake at this rate. You! Cake or death?" "Uh, death, please. No, cake! Cake! Cake, sorry. Sorry..." "You said death first, uh-uh, death first!" "Well, I meant cake!" "Oh, all right. You're lucky I'm Church of England!" Eddie Izzard, Dress To Kill

      46. I HATE acronyms with a passion

I can never remember what they stand for and it just pisses me off… and my workplace is loaded with them. A guy called at work a couple weeks ago identified himself as being from the helpline and started asking me a some questions using work jargon, one question was I going to do the EOD. I  told him I didn’t even know what that was which seemed to throw him off.  He asked me to do some stuff on the computer which I refused to do so he hung up.

We got a memo a couple days later, turns out he was a scammer. He thought if he used some work acronyms he might be able to con people but he never figured on the work people not knowing their own stupid acronyms.

        48. That's hilarious!

Good for you for not doing it.

I had a help desk person on the phone when our resident IT came to my desk. The phone was on speaker and the help desk guy told the IT guy, “we have a PEBKAC.” I told him, “sorry but the problem is with the computer. Looks like there’s also the PEOTP.”

        I was right. :)

Btw, PEBKAC means “problem exists between keyboard and computer.” My made up acronym was “problem exists over the phone.” :(

          50. I think you have "PEBKAC" wrong

To say “between keyboard and computer” wouldn’t make sense.  On my laptop, that’s virtually no space, and even on a desktop it’s nothing related to any problem.

I’ve heard it as “Problem exists between keyboard and chair,” meaning where the user sits, meaning that you’re the problem.

On a tangent: As a law student I was working as a research assistant for a professor.  In one of our conversations, trying to clarify a particular point, I asked him, “Under the APA, does the CSC appoint the ALJs for the SSA?”  As soon as I uttered the question I realized how weird it sounded and started chuckling — but he didn’t notice anything odd about it.  He simply gave me the answer.  Every field develops its jargon, of course.

All these years later, I still remember the question.  Alas, I’ve forgotten the answer.  It could have changed by now, anyway, so no big deal.

            63. Hah!

I understood most of that, Jim.

Under the APA, does the Cal Supreme Court appoint the Administrative Law Judges for the Social Security Administration?

I have had dealings with ALJs in my time, so I could piece together most of that.  I think☺️

              76. You missed CSC

There’d be no basis for the California Supreme Court to appoint ALJs for a federal agency like the SSA.  In truth, some federal ALJs are appointed by the agency itself, but others by the federal Civil Service Commission, and you have to check the Administrative Procedure Act to find out which.

Or at least, that was the setup some decades ago.  As I cautioned, don’t take any of this to the bank.

You’re right that ALJs are used in many contexts, not just the SSA.

            67. My boss used to start out all of his memos to me with "FYI"

As if I needed to know that a toilet in the men’s restroom in our Illinois office was plugged!! So he would send out all of these memos titled “FYI” — For Your Information — and they only rarely, if ever, related to anything I do at my job.

So, late last year, after receiving the 10,000th FYI memo from him sometime before Christmas, I responded back to him simply with “GFY, boss”.

He rushed in to my office about 10 minutes later and said, “Brad, what the hell does ‘GFY’ mean? I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out what it means.”

I deadpanned him as much as I possibly could, doing my best impression of Stoneface, Buster Keaton, as I could, and I looked him right in the eye and I said “It means ‘Go Fuck Yourself” “. And then I turned casually back around in my chair to do more work on my computer.

About 5 seconds later, after the shock wore off, he started laughing like a hyena and said, “Oh, I guess you don’t like my FYI’s.”

I wheeled around in my chair, crossed my eyes, and stuck my tongue out at him, and said, “By Jove, I think you’ve got it, Charlie!”

He chuckled to himself and said, “well, it’s just part of my job, to inform everyone what is going on in the company.”

I said, “Oh, you mean like how we all had to know that Sally Whatzername in Seattle wouldn’t be in her office all of next week because she broke her leg skiing? Or how we should all use the Southern entrance to the parking lot at our Ogden office because they are still busily plowing all of the snow trying to unblock the Northern entrance? Or how the twin doors in the east end of the hall of the shipping department in Tacoma need to remain unblocked at all times? You mean . . like those FYI’s?”

He said, “Okay, okay I got your point.”

It cut down my FYI memos by at least 50 percent by the first of January!

      78. And then there are the letters F and T and W.

Three combinations of them have their own meanings:

      FTW = For The Win

      WTF = What The Fuck

      TFW = That Feel When

That last one I’ve been seeing most on Tumblr, by young posters. I couldn’t figure it out at all for a while, and when I did learn its meaning, it still wasn’t all that comprehensible.
