The fact that Republican candidates would be disqualified due to election-related fraud is ironic considering that the GOP has spent years crowing about Democrats committing election fraud in the 2020 election on a broad scale — claims that have been found to be untrue in every U.S. state. In fact, it is high-ranking Republicans who have been found to have committed voter fraud to elect Trump.

The Michigan bureau said that this amount of forged signatures in one election cycle is potentially unprecedented. “Although it is typical for staff to encounter some signatures of dubious authenticity scattered within nominating petitions, the Bureau is unaware of another election cycle in which this many circulators submitted such a substantial volume of fraudulent petition sheets consisting of invalid signatures, nor an instance in which it affected as many candidate petitions as at present,” according to the report.

At least one candidate, Johnson, says their team is planning to challenge the bureau’s findings. The report stated that it’s unlikely that candidates were aware of the high amount of signature forgeries. The investigation into the signatures was started after citizens and the state Democratic Party had submitted complaints last month about the signatures.

“The extensive evidence of fraud and forgery found throughout the nominating petitions submitted by James Craig, Tudor Dixon, and Perry Johnson indicate not only that their irresponsible campaigns are grossly negligent, but that they are not capable of being accountable leaders,” state Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes said in a statement. The challenge to Dixon was ultimately found invalid by the bureau.

When I worked in a county elections office, the state did a representative sample to avoid having to check every signature, which would have been a lot of work for ballot measures. I typically got photocopies of three or four signature sheets with instructions to check one or two signatures on each sheet of 20 signatures. The state collected all the signature check results from the counties and calculated a good-bad ratio to apply to the total number of signatures. I’m afraid all this election fraud nonsense will create demands to check each individual signature for every nominating petition and ballot measure. I remember a right wing ballot measure that fell short, so the petitioners demanded a check of all 30,000 signatures. The state said “In your dreams!”

In King County, there are a million and a half registered.

The process is heavily automated, though. In the first step, people that don’t have a lot of experience compare actual envelopes with computer copies of the last six signatures the voter has on file. They are told that if they have any doubt at all about a match, they should pull it for the second step. Given that peoples’ signatures don’t change much over time, this clears the majority of the ballots.

The pulled ballots are given to a team of trained handwriting specialists, who clear just about all. The few exceptions go to a formal adjudication team.

In the event of a mismatch, voters are contacted three times by phone or email, and are sent a form to submit their latest signature.

Every ballot submitted has the voter’s signature checked. Our election workers had forgery spotting training from the state. It’s a lot of work, but manageable because it happens for a few days during the election.

–signature checking of the envelopes can start as soon as there are enough ballots to make the effort worthwhile.
