I’m SO glad diplomacy is back. From CNN at https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/29/politics/military-intel-leader-russia/index.html :

(CNN)The top US military intelligence official said during a congressional hearing on Thursday that the Russian military is an “existential threat” to the United States.

“The Russian military is an existential threat to the United States,” Lt. Gen. Scott Berrier, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing about worldwide threats.

Berrier said the country’s military is being used to maintain influence over states “along its periphery, compete with US global primacy and compel adversaries who challenge Russia’s vital national interests.”

Berrier’s comments come as tensions between Russia and the US remain high. The US unveiled sanctions against Moscow earlier this month over its interference in the 2020 US presidential election, the SolarWinds cyberattack and its ongoing occupation and “severe human rights abuses” in Crimea.

“Severe human rights abuses” in Crimea is new to me – maybe they allowed Crimea to have its water supply cut off??

According to CNN, Russia “may also be responsible” for some kind of “direct energy attacks” against diplomats, functionaries and just random people.  Remember that bull shit in Cuba in 2016?  Apparently now it is perfectly okay to act as if supposition and speculation is fact – and allegation is conviction

We’ve been there, done that, in the past. Arguably, the largest existential threat to the US are those who’d try another Bay of Pigs, arms for hostages/Iran Contra, Gulf of Tonkin, lies about a WMD program, lies about the “good terrorists” in Libya and Syria.

Those actions have actually cost us millions of lives, and trillions of dollars. And they’ve had an unimaginable cost on the relevant nations

Why can’t we just cooperate with Russia to try to resolve the Earth’s problems?

Not Russia. Not China. Not Cuba. Not the Middle East, or any other country anywhere.

      @artfromark

Honestly I think part of it is to give people a common enemy.  If we are focused on “defense” we are less focused on infrastructure, economy, food insecurity, homelessness, etc.  The money going into building war planes that don’t work should be going there.

At this current time, the crisis in India should be what is getting all the attention.  Even before domestic issues – that needs to be dealt with, urgently.  Or it could fuck the world quite a lot more than covid19 already has.

The various people and corporations that profit from the war machine though – they want this “escalation” with Russia to keep going.  Means more money for “defense”.

Honestly, I think at least 95% of what our politicians and “experts” say about Russia is total bull shit.  Still, that is what happens when so called intelligence agencies control the media narrative.  Anderson Cooper, host of what they called “keeping them honest” is a well known former (possibly current) CIA asset.

Lies only have to be believed by some of the people to be effective.

It’s hard for me to think of the Russians as enemies when I’ve met so many of them. Beyond their peculiar affinity for vodka, which I find vile, though not so vile as Scotch, they’re all right.

Anyway, I’ve heard this bullshit, or at least variations on the Be Afraid of Russia! propaganda, ever since I can remember. We’re in such imperial decline our government can’t even come up with new propaganda.

      Pathetic.

Also – this country is not a homogenized mass, we are individuals, with some real assholes in charge.  IMO, same thing for other countries, “asshole” designation varies.  I don’t “love” any other countries, I just feel so alienated that I won’t bother to vote, I won’t even wear an Old Navy tank top with the flag on it.  No one gets to pick where they will be born, and looks like the US treats its citizens and the rest of the world very badly.  So methinks the “existential threat” is only to the possibility of the MIC budget not increasing, although this is likely a cover for Biden ladling out more money to them anyway.  And there is nothing that could magically turn me into a “patriot”.  I do not believe “my country” cares about me.  I will help my family, friends, and neighbors and those in need as much as I possibly can, but not because I live here.  I am just a profit point to the folks who own and run things.

So if they are an existential threat to America then we better nuke them because, well, it’s them or us, according to this Curtis Le May wannabe. Remember, the people running the MIC believe America can win a nuclear war.  The world may not have to worry about climate anything if some of these crazies have their way.

All governments lie to their citizen's, but only Americans believe theirs.
