      Ivan III (the Great)

      Following his 1472 marriage to Sofia Paleologina, niece of the Byzantine Emperor, the Grand Prince of All Russia, Ivan III (Great), in 1480 adopted the Byzantine two-headed eagle to his royal crest. The two-headed eagle symbolized claim to Byzantine heritage and freedom from the Mongol Khan. Muscovite churchmen proclaimed Moscow to be the Third Rome (after Rome and Constantinople which had fallen to infidels). Ivan III also adopted the term tsar (Byzantine for caesar), a title employed by subsequent rulers of Russia until…………..

      Well, just a guess – even though I’ve probably been by her crypt in Cathedral Square.  There are a LOT of Tsars / Tsarinas there!
