Trump Alarms Lawmakers With Disparaging Words for Haiti and Africa

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/11/us/politics/trump-shithole-countries.html

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Thursday balked at an immigration deal that would include protections for people from Haiti and African countries, demanding to know at a White House meeting why he should accept immigrants from “shithole countries” rather than people from places like Norway, according to people with direct knowledge of the conversation.

Mr. Trump’s remarks left members of Congress attending the meeting in the Cabinet Room alarmed and mystified. They were there discussing an emerging bipartisan deal to give legal status to immigrants illegally brought to the United States as children, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity without authorization to discuss the explosive proceedings of the private meeting.

    ****

The comments were reminiscent of ones the president made last year in an Oval Office meeting with cabinet officials and administration aides, during which he complained about admitting Haitians to the country, saying that they all had AIDS, as well as Nigerians, who he said would never go back to their “huts,” according to officials who heard the statements in person or were briefed on the remarks by people who had. The White House vehemently denied last month that Mr. Trump made those remarks.

In a written statement, Raj Shah, the White House deputy press secretary, did not deny the account of the meeting on Thursday or directly address Mr. Trump’s comments.

    EDIT: Two more paragraphs added.

I apologize profusely to the wonderful nurses and nursing assistants, many of whom are from Haiti, who care selflessly for the sick, injured and elderly in my community. I thank them for their hard work and personal sacrifice and want them to know how appreciated they are for taking care of needy patients. There is such a shortage of nursing help here, a “crisis” in fact. Why in the world are we not welcoming in people willing to do the work that needs to be done?

Trump has it backward once again. No one wants to leave Norway and come here. They have almost no unemployment, an extremely high standard of living and little income inequality, almost a month off every year and women get paid maternity leave for 46 weeks at full pay. Come here? Why?

I live in Norway, why would we immigrate to the USA? We live in a socialist paradise.

We have 5 weeks paid holiday, paid sick leave, nearly free child care, more than a year paid maternity/paternity leave, low cost universal healthcare, excellent public education, free university, and a free and happy society.

The USA appears to be very unhappy, unsafe and intolerant in comparison.

Although his words are atrocious and inconceivably daft, he is essentially correct from a macro level. What he should have said more eloquently is that America should accept only two “classes” of immigrants: 1) those suffering an extreme level of political or religious intolerance; and 2) ONLY THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST. We should all prefer to have only the cream of the crop join our ranks. Welcome the engineers, doctors, mathematicians, and others that are the absolute best in their fields. I’m sorry, but we do not need to add people from any country that are here to contribute de minimis to society. It may not be the easiest pill to swallow, but we must make every effort to lift our country up rather than keep the status quo.

…and you think you’re going to stop this simply by ‘pulling a lever’, in a booth, behind a curtain, every 2 years? - Know yourself. And if you need help with that, call the FBI. -  There is only ONE solution to this mess:  New Party !

    6. Please add more content to your OP

Like the WaPo, the NYT has a paywall.  Therefore, could you please add the additional 2 allowable paragraphs – those don’t have to be the next 2 in order, but you can choose the 2 with the most substantive content.  Also, there’s no limit to the amount of readers’ comments you can post, and sometimes those can be quite powerful/informative.  Thanks.

run into that WaPo paywall many times too.  Never thought about posting comments.  Good idea!
