Trump lashes out, calls Russia investigation a 'witch hunt'

President Trump returned from a brief Twitter hiatus Thursday to call himself the victim of “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!” illustrating his anger over the appointment of a special counsel to head the investigation of Russian interference in last year’s election.

His tweets undercut the more measured official statement that the White House had issued the night before and illustrated the degree to which the investigation may distract and damage his presidency.

Trump went on to lament that his predecessor, President Obama, and electoral opponent, Hillary Clinton, were not similarly investigated by a special counsel.

“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel appointed!” he wrote, misspelling counsel. Trump did not specify what he meant by illegal acts.]`

      1. Actually, Trump is correct.

You think the only reason that people won't vote for a warmongering Third Way fracking-enabling cluster bomb throwing H-1B increasing lying pandering corporate and Wall Street shill who says she has no problem putting abortion rights on the table is because we are mad about Bernie?  Um, nope.

          5. Bwahahaha! I was waiting for that! Thank you!

Especially for the sarcasm tag!    There seems to be such a deliberate refusal for some to see the big fucking picture here.  Either deliberate, or remarkably simple-minded.

        4. American History is breaking new ground every day now.

Dershowitz says Trump is the greatest Presidential criminal in history already. It gets hard to keep up. Ah here it is:

        23. Technically maybe, but not really.

Remember Whitewater.  Remember the travelgate.  The Clintons were under years of investigations.  The investigators were lead by a special prosecutor not by a special counsel, but same thing insofar as the investigation is concerned.

Obama insisted on a lot of rules that insured less corruption in his administration.  People may disagree with his policies on things like surveillance, like the drone-strikes, like wars, and many other policies, but he ran a relatively clean administration.  The controversy over sales of weapons to Mexico was relatively insignificant to American democracy when you think of Watergate or the Iran-Contra matter (Reagan administration under investigation).  Even as Secretary of State, Hillary was under the investigation of the Benghazi committee which in my opinion never even mentioned what was really bad about the events in Benghazi, the likely transfer of weapons to questionable parties.

There is nothing “special” about the investigation of Trump.  It’s par for the course for all of the past administrations except maybe George W. Bush, but I think I just was too busy to pay much attention during that administration.

          29. Obama was, I admit, entirely open about the fact that he was owned by Wall

Street and and the MIC.  Started more conflicts than anybody!  We tortured some folks!  How fucking disarming and homey.  Go Obama!   Yes, there were “witch hunts”.   But no one was intent on trying to start a war with another superpower.  Also – Trump, IMO, has many miles to go before he can dream of being as corrupt as the Clintons and the Bush family.  Their body count is massive, and so is their grifting.    He is a businessman, for better and for worse, and the Clintons and the Bushes are just intent on money and power.  Globally.  Sometimes I am reminded of the idiocy of some, when reminded of the millions upon millions that the Clintons have grifted, tried to compare the Sanders’ newly purchased vacation home – financed by a house Jane had inherited – as some sort of bizarre proof that Bernie was as corrupt as the Clintons.  For fuck’s sake.  Venal is what the Clintons do for a living.  Happily.  I wonder if they have ever made an honest dollar, really, with no quid pro quo in favors or weapons.

In any event, what we post, what any of us post, whether it be heartfelt or an assignment, will not change the course the deep state or .1% have charted.  All I can really do is vote, and that likely may not count for any more than what I post.   I operate on cold logic, and am not moved one whit by repetitive or impassioned or long and excruciatingly detailed posts.  So this is all interesting, but never compelling.

      3. It's more than a witch hunt – it's part of a larger geopolitical strategy

that casts Russia as the adversary / enemy of the US no matter whether Trump is found guilty of collusion or not. It’s a win-win for those elements of the Deep State pushing for antagonism between the US and Russia.

(I just realized I was being unfair to witches, who faced the same situation during the actual witch hunts, and I apologize for that).

        24. See my post 23.

The Whitewater investigation — Clintons — expanded into years and years of investigations, many of which were warranted.

The Iran-Contra investigations — which led to indictments and prison terms.

        Watergate — no comment necessary.

        Benghazi — during Obama’s administration.

I was working too hard to know what was going on during much of George W. Bush’s administration, but there was the problem about 9/11.  That was investigated.  He should have been investigated more than he was in my opinion.

No president serves without some sort of investigation in this day and age.

      8. Can you do a special counsel on a Sec of State?

I guess you can do one for any reason. But I always think of them as tools for examining presidents.

We needed a special counsel to look into why no banksters went to jail under president Obama and why so many citizens lost their homes.

As many reasons as there are to fear Trump, there is more reason to fear a successful deep state coup against him. The precedent it sets will have repercussions for decades. We’ll have officially reached banana republic status.

        25. There is nothing special about this special counsel.

Every president since LBJ and with the exception perhaps of George H. W. Bush, has had some sort of investigation during their presidency.  Trump is just whining.  He apparently hasn’t been paying attention for the last 50 some years.

      16. If Bernie supports the investigation, I doubt it is a 'witch hunt'.

Given a choice between believing Donald or Bernie, I know which way I would go.

FDR stood for high/progressive taxes, tight regulation of corporations, effective legislation to support strong unions, a strong safety net, fiscal policy that supports full employment rather than austerity, engagement with the rest of the world in terms of trade and diplomacy and the Four Freedoms. Bernie supports the same issues plus an understanding of the danger posed by climate change. Count me as an FDR/Bernie liberal.

Only the Congress can sanction Trump, everything else is PR and propaganda. THe “criminal investigation” meme comes from Lindsay Graham.

          19. Yes, thanks for refreshing my memory on the sanction

It got me thinking about hypothetical situations and how and why that is (only congress can sanction). Gotta head out but will have to read up on that later

          30. "Only the Congress can sanction Trump, everything else is PR and propaganda."

Yes. And No. Indeed only congress can sanction a president. An investigation is not just PR and propaganda. Bernie is not into that.

Robert Mueller’s appointment as special counsel to oversee the Russia investigation is a positive step. I am hopeful that he will help us get to the bottom of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, including any role the president may have played. … Additionally, the ongoing investigations by both the Senate and House must continue.
