WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he has ordered American companies to exit China after Beijing unveiled retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion in U.S. goods, throwing a new twist into the bitter trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump said on Twitter he will issue a response to China’s latest tariff plan on Friday afternoon. The president was meeting with his trade team at midday, a senior White House official told Reuters.

“We don’t need China and, frankly, would be far better off without them. The vast amounts of money made and stolen by China from the United States, year after year, for decades, will and must STOP,” Trump tweeted.

“Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing your companies HOME and making your products in the USA.”

If HIS tariffs on imports from China were working, as he claims that they are, why then any need to “order” US companies out of China? By the way, can he do that …. order US companies out of any country of his choice?

@realityredux Good question. I know he can’t order American companies out of any country by tweet. Any Executive Order would be swiftly challenged in court by some of the most powerful American kleptocrats. Same goes for any declaration of national emergency. I think the kleptocrats would win in the courts. He could do it by legislation, but there’s zero chance of that.

Besides, the stock market dropped over 600 points today, and Trump watches the Dow Jones. To him, it’s ratings for his reality TV show. My feeling is that Trump will get a few phone calls and then do a pivot to some other bright, shiny object and the press and the Vichy Democrats will let him get away with it. Again.

Hot or cold, up or down, in or out… This guy cannot make up his mind. You would think he would avoid doing anything that might trigger a recession, but I guess he can just label news of a shrinking economy as fake news, or order his minions to release numbers that show more jobs, higher wages, etc. And he can always start a war.

Those great American companies are the ones that sold us out in the first place. I doubt they will listen to him.

@jwirr Worse for Trump, they’d fight him in court, and probably win. I doubt it will come to that. The Dow tanked today. Trump looks at the Dow like it’s Nielsen ratings for his reality TV show, so he’ll backpeddle and then come up with another subject for his next episode.

Is that in his job description, ordering US firms out of china, short of war?

are his approval ratings going down yet?

Even if he could do this, and I don’t think he can, the “alternative” to China is not going to be making things in the US. The GOP tax scam actually incentivizes outsourcing. A lot of people don’t know that, maybe even Trump. Even if these companies left China, they’d just go somewhere else with cheap labor (Vietnam, etc.).

Also, lol @ the way Trump worded this: “Hereby ordered.” He thinks he’s some despotic king from the middle ages. Jeezus…

@gamemeat You are right. Even if American companies like Apple, Microsoft, Foxconn and Wal-Mart stopped making or buying things from China, they’d just switch to some other cheap labor market.

As for the Divine Right of Kings thing Trumpie’s got going, that’s just one more sign of dementia to me. The man is mentally ill and in cognitive decline. Not that his cognition was ever very much to begin with.

“… including bringing your companies HOME and making your products in the USA.”

Say what you might, but there’s a lot of individuals of a certain political leaning who have been saying this for years but are now disparaging because of who said it. You get the distinct feeling that if Obama or Clinton or any Democratic president were in office and doing/saying this exact thing with tariffs etc…, they would be singing a different tune.

And then they get upset when their hypocracy is noticeable.

Name five who have ever said it and meant it. Even if you can, Trump’s not one of them.

        I thought I was clear, but maybe I wasn’t.

My reference is not towards those pols who have said it, as I expect pols to lie. It’s more towards those average, everyday, rank and file Dems who claim they hate multi-nationals and how they move overseas to avoid paying taxes, etc… I’ve believed for a while they simply mimick what they think sounds good or what they’re told to say. I’ve never really been convinced they care about anyone other than themselves, having the party they belong to in power as if it’s some extension of themselves, and controlling others they view as being too incompetent to vote and/or conduct their affairs “in their own self-interest”. They are quite authoritarian.

        I’ve grown weary of them.
