(The Hill)President Trump acknowledged the danger of COVID-19 in recorded interviews even as he publicly downplayed the threat of the emerging coronavirus pandemic, according to a new book from Bob Woodward.

Trump told the Washington Post journalist in a March 19 interview that he “wanted to always play it down” to avoid creating a panic, according to audio published by CNN. But the president was privately aware of the threat of the virus.

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump said in a Feb. 7 call with Woodward for his book, “Rage,” due out next week. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

“This is deadly stuff,” the president added.

They’re all jumping up and down proclaiming the End of Trump because he lied about Covid over at SV. I’ve got news for them. We already knew that. Maybe not in March, but certainly by April. Everybody but the most fanatical of the Trump cultists figured that one out. The media can play this up all they want and it won’t make a difference.

People are going hungry. There’s still a homelessness crisis down the road. Supply chains are not working correctly. Climate change enhanced natural disasters are hitting different states in turn. We’re in a Second Great Depression. There are no jobs. But the media, and the liberal Vote Blue No Matter Whoers, are going to focus on this latest non-revelation by Bob Woodward, who is now as establishment as they come. Sorry, but this isn’t important.

…but what is Woodward’s excuse for sitting on that video for months, while the discourse was muddied by denialists and the death toll continued to rise?  Hmmm?  Hey Bob, was it worth the extra $$$ you think you will get for your book by releasing it now rather than back then when it might have made a real difference?

And people wonder why some of us are cynical about Washington DC and its denizens!

Why did he sit on it.

@gloriamundi I’m sure he sat on it for two reasons–1) To probably make more money from book sales 2) To time the release in an attempt to have the maximum negative impact on Trump’s re-election chances, just like The Atlantic did with that story about Trump dissing American soldiers killed in World War I.

I think most eligible voters are as cynical of DC and its denizens as you and I.

He says he did not want to panic us!!! Hey Mr. tRump we are not all as stupid as you think we are. Most of us know what is happening throughout the world and we also know what a pandemic is having been through a few in our lifetime. What panics us is that fact that we have a president that is totally unable to make decisions to help all of us.

What he was worried about was the 1% and Wall Street and the banksters. Instead of helping all of us he helped himself.

@jwirr I don’t trust Biden any more than I do Trump, but I know a lot about Joe Biden. All of us here at JPR do, but most people don’t. I think a large minority does, maybe 40% or so, but not most.

It’s easy to understand why, every time Trump points to what’s happening in Trump’s America and says that’s what Biden’s America will look like, the obvious reaction, in the language of my neighborhood, is It looks like that right fucking now, and YOU’RE the President, motherfucker! Joe Biden ain’t the President! You are!

Sometimes I think Trump wants to lose so he can start his own TV network, make millions off of fools who believe in his conspiracy theories, and keep his face in the news, with none of the responsibility for addressing the disaster he leaves in his wake. It’s like bankruptcy, only BIGGER! Only a really, really smart guy can pull that off! IOW, he’ll brag about it.

The obvious voting choices are to either vote for Biden or not vote at all. A lot of suburbanites might not phrase it that way, but if they think that way and they vote, then most of them will vote for Biden. It’s Biden’s best hope of winning, and it may be enough. I just don’t care which one wins because neither one will do anything to help out my family and community.

      I agree, @coldmountaintrail

Rather than working as Carl Bernstein’s partner, Woodward was more likely his monitor.

As for delaying this explosive information, to paraphrase Les Moonves, “It may be bad for America, but it’s great for Bob Woodward.”

To boost book sales, celebrity journalist Bob Woodward concealed a tape of Donald Trump that contained information about the pandemic that may have prevented thousands of deaths. This isn’t hyperbole. This is peak 2020 insanity.

      By Andrew Perez/David Sirota

Back in February, there were plenty of questions about just how deadly the coronavirus was, and how it could be transmitted. Was it really all that lethal? Could you catch it through the air? Some experts said it probably wasn’t airborne. Few seemed to have definitive answers. But the nation’s most famous celebrity journalist knew — and knew the president did too — but decided not to tell anyone, and nearly 200,000 Americans have died since.

This is the story of Bob Woodward — the man who earned fame and fortune uncovering the Watergate scandal, and now the man who decades later was informed by the president of the United States that a pandemic was deadly and airborne, and decided to hold that information for seven months so he could juice book sales at a more opportune time closer to the election.

“It goes through air, Bob. That’s always tougher than the touch,” Trump told Woodward in early February, months before scientists publicly pressed the World Health Organization to acknowledge the airborne nature of the disease. “You know, the touch, you don’t have to touch things. Right? But the air, you just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed. And so, that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than your — you know, your, even your strenuous flus.”

Trump openly admitted to Woodward that he wanted to downplay the severity of the virus. “I wanted to always play it down,” Trump told him in March. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

LINK–Jacobin, Bob Woodward Made Himself Complicit in Trump’s Coronavirus Crime Against Humanity

It is beautiful thing when the press withholds information from the public for this or that reason. It has happened several times in history. Now it was so Woodward could release a book full of bluster. Great.

Back in February the public was informed that COVID-19 was airborne also the public was informed that people become contagious before showing symptoms or getting sick. Yet there was Trump knowing otherwise saying do not worry about this, it is no worse that the flu. Then there were the use of this or that drug which according to the President would be a cure. Trump fucked this whole event up, now here in the U.S.A. it is out of control.

Yeah, Woodward is Complicit in a crime against humanity.

@mrdmk Do you want Trump to win?

Sorry, couldn’t resist. That’s what I’ve seen on other sites and Facebook. All journalistic and ethical standards go out the window because Trump Bad!

I’m angrier at him sitting on this knowledge so he could make a mint with his book than Inam at Trump for just doing what he does, which is lie.

      completely downplaying it.

The “we don’t need to offer anything because Trump Bad” strategy would work a lot better if there was more difference between Trump and the Dems – Feb 24, while selling off stocks before the crash:

Like Water is wet and Shit smells.

A politician who always tells the truth will a) not get elected b) if in office so0n won’t be.

This country, like most other countries, was built on myths.   And most people still buy into the myth of “honest politician”.

Most voters vote for people they they think will be honest.   Or think such an animal exists somewhere.

In a democracy politics has only a passing interest in ideals.     Governance demands compromise to function.  At some point all politicians will compromise to some degree just to stay in office or make government work.

AOC & company all have ideals but realize that  to forward those ideals they’ll have to be in office or have someone in office who they can convince to govern progressively.   They are damn sure that Trump isn’t going to be convinced if reelected but that Biden will almost certainly have to compromise with them to govern.

Every president this country has had has compromised, lied, and manipulated “the people” in order to govern.

When governments do it, It’s never done to protect citizens. It’s always done to hide corruption and malfeasance.

But if I had been Woodward, I wouldn’t have said anything either. I would never trust Trump to tell the truth or to accurately understand science. I would have thought he was lying, too stupid to understand what scientists were saying or spreading another conspiracy theory. Rember Trump talking about disinfectants and bleach as a cure. Only after doing thorough research, would I have attempted to get some stories out.

Not sure what it would have taken to verify the virus is passed through the air. Even now the WHO downplays the airborne nature of the virus. Only 10 percent of cases pass through touching surfaces one recent study found.

So Woodward would have had to couch any information very carefully to ensure it wasn’t just another conspiracy Don the Con was spreading.
