(WSWS) At least 22 immigrants have died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Donald Trump took office in January of 2017, according to a review of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents by NBC News.
The deaths come as the Trump administration has escalated the assault on immigrants in the United States, increasing the number of people held in its sprawling network of some 200 jails and detention camps to 42,000 per day in 2018.
Under Trump the population of the immigrant prison network has risen 30 percent over the average under Obama and twice that under George W. Bush, filling many jails to capacity. The rapidly rising number of immigrants held in federal custody has contributed to the recent rise in deaths. Despite this, the administration has requested that the capacity be expanded to 51,000 as it continues its anti-immigrant rampage in 2019.
Reports of unsanitary conditions, spoiled food, abusive guards and lack of medical staff are common. Detainees are treated like convicted criminals and are frequently placed in solitary confinement regardless of their age or health. A report published by Human Rights Watch last year found that “dangerously substandard care in immigration detention” contributed to the deaths of 15 people in ICE custody between December 2015 and April 2017.

The number does not include the children. I cannot fathom the hopelessness of those poor souls who were being “repatriated” to places such as Eritrea. Suicides? Nooses hanging in cells discovered on a surprise inspection? Trump, Nielsen and all their compadres should be behind bars for crimes against humanity.

We have no timely way to hold individuals who do harm responsible and to
remove them from office. We don’t even have a “no confidence” vote — and
the Nixon scandals rewarded him by allow him to “appoint” a new VP after
Agnew resigned due to bribery charges against him. In the end, the nation had
a president who had never run for office of VP or President and who was only
Nixon’s choice.

A critical reading would reveal that even though the number of illegals incarcerated has increased dramatically under trump, the number of deaths per capita has decreased. So arguably trump is doing better than obama or bush (not defending trump just showing how the media tries to slat its reporting to fit their master’s globalist agenda)
According to the article:
Under Trump the population of the immigrant prison network has risen 30 percent over the average under Obama and twice that under George W. Bush, filling many jails to capacity.
In total there have been 188 deaths in immigration detention centers since 2003 when DHS began to oversee the operation of ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
188 divided by 15 years is 12.5. Trump’s average is 25 (added the 3 missing in the article) divided by 2 which is 12.5, but with a much larger incarcerated population.

that transgender refugee died after she was physically abused by guards? Why the hell are you defending Trump on a progressive board?

These ICE deaths are not new. A whole lot of people have died in ICE detention from 2004 . (Does not matter if it is a republican or democratic administration)

The point of the article was to mislead the reader into thinking trump’s policies are killing illegals more than prior administrations. I simply pointed out the media’s mendacity.
Nevertheless, I believe the ICE people did all they could to prevent the recent child deaths as the situations were presented. No one wanted those kids to hurt or die. Hindsight is 20/20 if you want to debate that.

Why do you have to be reminded AGAIN that this is a progressive board?
Hell, no... I'm not giving up...

Some ppl have a strange idea of what being progressive is. Some believe to be progressive you must ignore facts, reality and anything that does not conform with what they WANT to believe.
For those who knee jerk their outrage/beliefs with the faux outrage of the day as determined by the MSM, would be better labelled as ideologues than a progressives.

It is not in ICE best interest to have children die in their custody. They will do whatever they can do to keep them alive just to avoid criticism. One would hope that they would also have some bit of humanity involved too, but they are not stupid about bad PR. Dying children will get their budget cut and lead to more scrutiny. They probably are trying to prevent deaths.
