a magazine thaI was told to take long ago when Government and Politics graduate student at the University of Maryland. So the argument goes/went – that magazine – even if you don’t agree with it – presents the perspective from US foreign policy elites….
For me, it’s amazing how the magazine’s authors have ‘hair-on-fire-moments’ (iow are alarmist) any time China has a military exercise in the South China Sea and/or visibly tests some of its military equipment….behavior that the US exhibits routinely at home and abroad………..
The US establishment just can’t accept the reality that other countries have spheres of influence that can’t necessarily be reconciled with the US Navy (Army, AF, etc.) in their back yards.

They are an older model, which during the Trump administration, were agreed to be upgraded. An entirely new model Patriot missile system was planned for deployment in 2025.
Any stationing of US forces in Taiwan will almost certainly result in an immediate crisis.
I would anticipate any initial hostilities would involve the PRC taking the ROC islands immediately off shore China, Kinmen, Wuqin, and Matsu, and close the surface and air corridors related to them to Taiwan. These are an artifact of history, and really offensive to Chinese historical sensitivity. This would symbolize a visible reversal of the US China contest in the fifties. They could take other Taiwan offshore possessions, in the South China Sea. They don’t need to overfly Taiwan, they can just blockade it, or put it under siege. In my opinion Taiwan’s infrastructure is vulnerable, with a limited number of high value cultural features necessary to civilized life. China could destroy these at any time. I think this article that Alexander is interpreting is somewhat deceptive in its intent.
Although not desirable from China’s point of view, I believe that China could prepare a massive invasion on relatively short notice. It would use civilian and commercial shipping resources. The west consistently underestimates Chinese organizational capabilities.

If China does send military flights over Taiwan the US won’t do jack shit except yelp.
