(Siasat) Washington: The United States could complete its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan within days, according to US officials. This makes the current week a critical one for President Joe Biden’s campaign to end America’s longest war even as US military officials warn the country could devolve into civil war.

A defense official insisted to CNN on Tuesday that the number of US troops in Afghanistan for embassy protection and airport security would not exceed 650 for now. “This week could be a critical week in the withdrawal and end of the retrograde process,” he said.

As many as 1,000 US troops could remain in the country after the formal withdrawal to assist in securing the US Embassy in Kabul and the city’s airport, a senior administration official told CNN, and it is now unclear how long North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops will remain.

A formal conclusion this week to the US military withdrawal, or retrograde, would mark an astonishingly quick end to a process that Biden initiated in April when he ordered the military to leave by September 11.

US officials say there were some 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan, plus hundreds of additional special forces who are not publicly acknowledged when Biden made his decision in April to withdraw them.

So 1000 not leaving protecting diplomats and VIPs at the airport and embassy. Except that i met a veteran a several years ago who told me that was his job working as a security force contractor at US embassies. I believed he was former special forces who had worked at the South Korean embassy and then later in Iraq.

then there are unknown numbers of special forces in mufti that are mentioned in the quote above plus whatever other contractor forces are there.

Then there are the NATO forces that apparently not leaving.

Seems as if someone still can’t really make up their mind. Perhaps events may decide for them.

I think that’s what will happen. NATO forces aren’t going to want to be in Afghanistan all by themselves with no American Army backup, and European voters don’t approve of the Forever War anyway. It’s an easy decision for the British or Dutch to make. The French and Germans split years ago.

As for the contractors, they’re mostly mercenaries and adventurers of one sort or the other, and those types of people usually also have a strong desire to live long enough to enjoy their gains, ill-gotten or otherwise. If it starts to look like they’re very likely to get killed if they stay, they’ll get the fuck out post haste.

Like the CIA guy did in the 1975 photo. He was just honorable enough to try to evacuate the Vietnamese families who had helped that lost imperial cause. I wonder how the Afghan help will be treated.
