    US Weather Info Sites

I’m making this thread to list the sites I like for weather data. Almost all are government websites, because I feel the NWS and NOAA do a better job overall than the corporate sites. If you like the latter, that’s fine, but the only corporate site I use is Weather Underground, and it’s aggravating at times for the lack of info.

    NWS Forecast Office Houston/Galveston, TX

    Harris County Flood Warning System
This is a good page for seeing the rainfall totals and flood stages.

    Harris County Emergency Management page

    Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service (NWS)
(Use this to confirm reports of “rivers” out of their banks) (mostly bayous and creeks here)

    Houston Transtar
    Incidents / Road Closures
    CCTV

    National Hurricane Center

    Detailed / Scientific
USGS – Water resources of the United States

    NOAA – Imagery and Data

Tropical Tidbits (privately owned and operated) (not corporate)

NCAR – National Center for Atmospheric Research
    Satellite page: RAP Real-Time Weather

Pages for comparison to past storm systems and floods in the Houston/Galveston area:
    TS Allison (2001)

    TS Claudette (1979)

      2. You're welcome :)

And it looks like you’ve gone over 10k posts today. You’ve added much to the conversation as well, and I thank you for that, too :hi:

          4. I don't always look at my numbers, either,

but you post a lot around here, almost as much as Mary and SFFH

      7. Well!

That’s a new one for me. Thanks! And I’m glad I can help this way, since I can’t get out and about (no truck or boat.)

        8. How's it going this morning?

Scary posts on the nextdoor site in the area I’m in. People with 5 ft of water in their homes, stuck on the second floor and can’t get through to 911.

I love this post. It’s got great information. I’m going to tweet it out

          10. Our little patch of non-flooded space is still not flooded.

In fact, people have been driving by on the street, which is actually good to hear for once. I don’t know how bad it is in the flooded areas, but if our street can drain, then things must be draining somewhere.

I’m on Nextdoor as well, and during this disaster, they’ve actually been helpful and acting like real neighbors. The rest of the time, that place isn’t always so pleasant. As someone on one of my friend’s FB feeds said “Nextdoor: Your Paranoid, Racist Neighbor” and it’s so true! It also seems to be the case no matter where you are in the country. Even my past-wife up in northern Washington state affirmed that attitude on Nextdoor there.

I get email notifications of new threads and conversations from Nextdoor, so I can see at a glance what’s going on. Still, I use the sites above to get better data that observations alone can make.

That’s cool that you’re sharing this to the rest of the Internet, too. I have to admit that I’m a bit of a weather nerd. I don’t always understand what’s being said by the scientific reports from the meteorologists, but I’m happy that they are putting their observations, data, and research out there. I look forward to the time when our science-based agencies get more than enough funding to do their important work.

            12. Couldn't agree more.

I’ve seen worse stuff there than on YouTube. And that’s pretty horrible.

I’m trying to get it out there. It’s a fantastic post.

From what was posted this morning by the constable’s office, much better today though still rain.

However, east of us will take another major hit today

    9. Thanks so much

As a small farmer, the 1st thing I look at in the morning is the weather. It can make or break me.

I have found the government sites are much more accurate. For example, during a drought the commercial sites always predict rain for my area about 3 to 10 days out. As the date approaches, they move that date back. So, you are left thinking rain is coming soon when it is Not. I think commercial sites do this in order to get people to associate hope with them, no matter the accuracy. While the government sites just feed you the truth come what may.

      11. You are most welcome :)

Some of the sites I posted are probably beyond any of us for the data given (as I discovered on the USGS page.) But if you can understand it, then there’s yet another resource to help out.

At first, I didn’t understand why a commercial site would do such a thing, but it clicked just a minute ago. They want you to come back to their site for the ad-clicks they get. They presumably have no interest in giving useful data. It’s just bait to get you to make them more money. Typical corporate thinking.

And yeah, the government sites just want to help people.

    13. The NWS

is where ALL of the commercial sites get their data from.

Another great thing about the NWS site, weather.gov. It has no advertisements, and therefore loads a lot faster than others.

      14. Isn't that the truth! (about it loading faster)

The only commercial site I use is Weather Underground, and I’m forever cussing out their “Wundermap” for loading slow, and then defaulting with the “weather stations” turned on. There is no setting to turn that off of default.

Before the Weather Channel bought them out, it was the best non-governmental private site for weather geeks. One cool feature of the Wundermap was that you could turn on a setting that would allow you to see the data on storm cells, such as moisture density, wind direction, cloud height, and a projected cone of where that cell might go within the next twenty minutes.

All of that disappeared when they went corporate. TWC seemed to think that people didn’t want all of that data at their fingertips, so they dumbed it way down.

    17. A couple of more.

Tropical Tidbits is a very good site.

For those of us in the NW, though there is stuff that can be good for anywhere in the country.

    Satellite and Models; https://atmos.washington.edu/~ovens/loops

And the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) for their products useful in predicting severe weather.
