I came across this July article from the Canberra Times on Stewart Alexander’s Facebook page. I voted for Stewart for President when he was on the Ohio Ballot as a Socialist in 2012. While I think the article mostly gives the Democrats a pass, everything it says about the Republicans and the corruption of American government is spot on. Plus, it’s nice to see what thoughtful people in other countries think of what’s happening in America:

Just how rotten is the United States’ political system? The answer is rotten, as in it will only take a small kick for the whole edifice to fall in, let alone a big kick like COVID-19.

The idea is about as fanciful as the collapse of the Soviet empire seemed in 1987, when President Ronald Reagan famously demanded: “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Yet, a short time later, a little chink in the Iron Curtain at the Hungary-Austria border saw the whole rotten regime collapse.

Almost nobody predicted it, with the notable exception of Soviet dissident Andrei Amalrik. Amalrik is not as well known as dissidents like Andrei Sakharov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn because he was killed in a car crash in 1980 – but not before his writings had been smuggled out to the West. Amalrik was unlike other dissidents, who sought East-West accommodation and a little softening of the Soviet hard line while still under a communist regime (because the end of the regime seemed a hopeless cause).

Instead, Amalrik pointed out in detail the inherent rottenness of the Soviet communist system, which he said would be gone by 1984. He was not far out. He pointed out the circumstances in which a great power succumbs to self-delusion because it imagines itself to be indestructible.

I tried to respond earlier thanks for this it is always good to read things from outside the US. I almost stopped when she did her little anti Russia and China thing.  Shhhheeeesh I am tired of that. I do believe the US has worn out it’s welcome, and even if Biden wins I don’t think he will sucker in other countries  he is not a smooth talker like Obama.  Australia is being pushed on China, but it needs China probably more then anyone.

      .

If you give a man enough rope, it will be six inches too short. This is not the nature of rope- it is the nature of man.

      world.

Trump has just hastened the process. Something that appeals to many I am sure.

"Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect." JG

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not solved with more nationalism.

It also appeals to me and many other Americans. Stepping down from the role of Imperial Hegemon would more than likely improve my own family’s and community’s standard of living. @peacecorps

Just like they did in the banking collapse in 2009 – socialize the losses, privative the profits.  @ohiobarbarian
