As President Donald Trump faces growing criticism from veterans and some ex-military leaders—including his former Defense Secretary Gen. Jim Mattis—for deploying U.S. troops against peaceful protesters, busloads of soldiers arrived in the nation’s capital on Wednesday in what critics warned is part of the White House’s effort to intimidate and squash nationwide demonstrations against the police killing of George Floyd.

More than 10 tour buses filled with troops pulled up in Washington, D.C. Wednesday afternoon after Pentagon chief Mark Esper—who just hours earlier balked at Trump’s threat to use active-duty forces to confront protesters—reversed his order sending soldiers home from the capital region following a meeting at the White House.
      …………….

“The numbers of U.S. military security forces in D.C. right now is just ridiculous. This is pure intimidation,” Tim Shorrock, correspondent for The Nation, tweeted in response to a video of troops lining up in the capital. “Trump is very afraid. The longer we stay in the streets, the more frightened he gets.”

“This is what authoritarianism looks like,” added journalist Ben Norton. “After decades of waging war across the planet, the U.S. empire is waging war directly on its own people.”

Is he thinking “WTF am I doing here?” Sure looks that way to me. None of these guys signed up for this.

I think Trump has taken this too far. Looks like most Americans agree that he has gone too far.

I would like to remind you that U.S. health insurance companies do not contribute anything to health care. They are only a PARASITIC middle man receiving an undeserved cut of "FREE MONEY".

someone posted that s/he had been talking with some young soldiers who said, that if ordered, they would fire into a crowd of unarmed civilian US citizens.

So, I was talking to some high school ROTC students one day and I put the question to them.  There were two boys and one girl.  “If ordered, even though it is illegal, would you fire into an unarmed crowd of civilian US citizens?”  The girl, immediately, almost before I finished asking the question, answered, “Yes, Ma’am.  I would do whatever my superior officer told me to do.”  The other two students agreed.

That is what terrifies me.  I’ve been told by veterans that this sort of thing would not happen because soldiers are trained not to follow illegal orders and that particular order is emphasized as illegal.  I realize that these are different times, but I do remember that we just observed the 50th anniversary of Kent State last month where the National Guard did just that:  fired into a crowd of unarmed civilian US citizens.

Given the attitude of the current Administration and the ground swell of feelings that have broken out all over this country on all sides of the political spectrum, we are standing on the razor’s edge of chaos and disaster.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people don’t know the difference, especially on the left. It’s like learning about the military or thinking of it in terms other than condemnation are outside of the Overton Window or something.

Looks like the people in US are finally getting a very small taste of what it is to be in the crosshairs of these bloodthirsty soldiers.  Hopefully, the blind support for these soldiers and their bloated budgets will go down.

We can only hope that Trump is too stupid to repeat history. “It can’t happen here. It can’t happen now. Things are different now.” Famous last words. Trump ain’t Hitler, but the latter was also viewed as a buffoon until he wasn’t.

They are called 'human' rights not "if politicians do not feel threatened" rights. Many politicians see national sovereignty/security as more important because they protect their power and wealth. Human rights often do just the opposite.

National issues (slavery/racism, income inequality, pandemics and pathetic health care, weak unions) are not solved with more states' rights. Global problems (climate change, migration, trade, war, pandemics) are not resolved with more national sovereignty.

I had some training in crowd control and riot training. If I was told to shoot at my fellow Americans I would Not. The sailors I lead would not have either, even if I ordered them.

I’m not sure what troops today would do.
