What our veterans really deserve: Tulsi Gabbard says the best way to honor the troops is to stop sending them to serve in needless foreign wars

Like so many Americans, the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, is what motivated me to join the Army National Guard — to defeat the evil that visited us on that day. I enlisted out of a deep conviction that service above self is our highest calling.
Throughout over 16 years as a soldier, first as a private and now as a major — including two deployments to the Middle East — I forged lifelong bonds with so many brave patriots. Even in the most dire of circumstances, the best of humanity shines through.
But politicians in both parties have failed to truly honor their sacrifices. Serving in a medical unit in Iraq, I saw firsthand the terribly high costs of disastrous interventionist policies launched in the naive and wrongheaded belief that we should police the world and impose our will on foreign societies through brute force.
Paying tribute to those who have served on Veterans Day is commendable. But ultimately, symbolic gestures are cheap. At this very moment, President Trump is using the instruments of America’s military power for purposes that could only be described as old-style, naked imperialism: directing our troops to guard Syrian oil fields that don’t belong to us, with promises to take that oil and profit from it — the perfect recruiting tool for jihadists and extremists who wish our country harm.

Dear American people,
If you want to help combat veterans, stop electing politicians who make so many of us. Thank you.

For a LONG, LONG time, my S.O. has, when seeing the militarization of practically everything, vocally announced, “Bring them HOME!” I was a little shocked the first time he did this, but got over that once I realized that I was the one being conditioned to “honor” and “thank” for military service that was of no service, but to that of the oil pipelines and oilfields… Really, the most honorable thing was to point out how these soldiers have been recruited and manipulated into the armed forces, or given little other choice out of high school.
It’s true, and Tulsi leads with the most honest analysis of this foreign policy.
Hell, no... I'm not giving up...

And, in that process cut our military spending down to the same level as, say, Sweden or Costa Rica.
