What's going to happen to JPR now?

Jackpine Radicals is now under new ownership. Mary and Manny have decided to step down. They are not leaving JPR, but have decided to take a less active role. We are grateful they built JPR to what it is today.

Sofarfromheaven, Landofenchantment and I will now have the pleasure of guiding JPR to the future. As always, it’s members like you who are also a guiding force for JPR. Let’s continue to work together to get progressives elected.

What’s going to happen to JPR now?

In the next couple of weeks, JPR will be moving to the Vbulletin platform. This new iteration will be called JPR 3.0.

As some members can testify, the current software is challenging. Between not being able to post, receiving posting errors, etc… your “hamster overlords” have decided to start fresh. While the new site is being built, we urge you to save any data (posts, pictures, videos, etc.) you would like to take with you to our new site. JPR 2.0 will be archived and new posts will be disabled.

In addition to JPR 3.0, we’re bringing more moderators on board. Some have already started, while others will join later. An announcement will be made on the new site as to who they are. This is an exciting time for JPR. We look forward to what the future holds.

        52. IMO people with posting problems could solve those in advance by getting rid of

Microsoft software. I use Linux software (the Ubuntu flavor) and the Firefox browser and have never had a problem with this site.

      4. Awesome news re JPR 3. Welcome to our new benevolent overlords!

“The manufacturing aristocracy which is growing up under our eyes is one of the harshest which ever existed in the world; but at the same time it is one of the most confined and least dangerous. Nevertheless the friends of democracy should keep their eyes anxiously fixed in this direction; for if ever a permanent inequality of conditions and aristocracy again penetrate into the world, it may be predicted that this is the channel by which they will enter.”  ~Alexis De Tocqueville (1835)

      6. What will happen to JPR bookmarks?

I’m asking about the Bookmarks function within the JPR forum (aka Favorite Forum Topics), not my browser’s bookmarks.

I have a ton of JPR bookmarks that I’d hate to lose, and to manually convert each one to a browser bookmark would take a long time.

It may seem trivial in the larger scope of things, but it’s a large body of information I’d lose, so I’m wondering if there’s any other way to recover them other than the time-consuming process of converting them all to browser bookmarks.

        7. Hi Dreamnightwind,

I’m going to check with ‘Pool but I’m relatively certain that there is no provision for extracting URL’s back out of texts.

That being the case, all I can do is make a suggestion. It is going to be time consuming but it is a sure fire way to save all the web addresses. Open a standard text editor and copy/paste all the URL’s in directly from your posts. Your activity can be used to quickly find any original OP’s you posted and then if there are others in replies on other OP’s, you will have to search your activity to locate those replies.

What may be really time consuming is the fact that I’m not sure just how far back in time the activity function can access. There were several ‘issues’ that came up with the history database during the last upgrade.

I’m going to call the master to this and maybe he has better ideas.

          8. Thanks, but perhaps my question was misunderstood

I used the “bookmark this thread” function that appears at the bottom of every OP to save links to info I’d like to be able to get back to in later years. Few, if any, of these OP’s were my own, they just had info I felt I’d want to find again someday, a body of knowledge to some extent.

All of these can be listed by clicking on the Bookmarks link that appears on the top right of every JPR page. I have 14 pages of them, would be a lot to manually save all of those as you suggested, so I was hoping there would be a better migration path than that, ??

Thanks again for responding, I look forward to more info re this issue, and wish you luck with JPR 3.0 or whatever it turns into.

            9. Let's see what Deadpool has to say.

JPR isn’t going to “turn into” anything. It will remain the same in scope and idealism. Though we do hope that it will be considerable easier for our members to use the site.

        24. Unfortunately…

Your bookmarks will stop working once this domain is transferred to the new site. The plan is to archive this site until the end of October before it vanishes. We’re making a clean break from WordPress/bbpress. Continuing to use it is not worth the headache.

I would suggest going through your bookmarks during that time, and screenshot any topic you want.

      13. I'm not very tech savvy. I don't understand.

Is our current JPR “going dark,” meaning I will not be able to access its OPs & replies?  All of my OPs & replies, and those of others, will vanish?

I have not bookmarked or otherwise saved anything!  I figured I could always recover things at JPR or by browser searches.  I have devoted considerable time and effort to my OPs & replies at JPR.  This will all be lost?

…we urge you to save any data (posts, pictures, videos, etc.) you would like to take with you to our new site. JPR 2.0 will be archived and new posts will be disabled.

What does “archived” mean?  Will the archive be accessible?  Will it be searchable?

What does “new posts will be disabled” mean?  Which “new posts”?  When?

      • Ohio Barbarian (11777 posts)
        Moderator

        19. My understanding is that the new platform will allow access to stuff on the old,

but it may not be possible to preserve our bookmarks. I’m not positive on that, however, and will wait for DP to explain. If he doesn’t, rest assured I’ll harass him.  I also don’t know how searchable it will be.

I’m pretty sure “new posts will be disabled” means that once JPR 3.0 is up and running, no one will be able to comment on a thread on the then-defunct JPR 2.0, so there won’t be any months or years-old OP’s suddenly reappearing again when somebody kicks them.

The bright side of this is that the Captcha monster will be slain and people like @lordthomas and @thompaine and the gods know how many others will no longer be imprisoned in the title box. Hopefully the site will be a wee bit faster as well.

        28. This version will be going dark at the end of Oct.

Take this time to save any data you want.

The archive will be accessible until the end of Oct. Yes, it will be searchable.

Posting will be disabled on this site once 3.0 is open for members. I’m aiming for a Monday launch for 3.0.

            62. I doubt it.

Search engines need time to bot pages on websites.

THis older version of JPR is going to be under a new URL so search engines won’t even know it exists for a while.

          108. NEW QUESTION: Will the old JPR be archived as a "read only" copy at…

          …the new JPR 3.0?

Is our only recourse, after the end of October, for accessing old OPs, replies & discussions, something like the

        67. This is a good one.

I use a pic hosting site for pics in my posts, so I just delete them as time goes on there.

I’m gonna play with the media button and see if I can figure this out for you. If I can’t then I’ll call @deadpool to check in and tell us what to do.

        ON EDIT: got it.

Open your stored media by clicking on the add media button.

        Open media library tab.

click on any picture or press control and click on those pictures you want to delete. Each one should have a check mark in the upper right hand corner that says deselect.

On the right side of the media box you should see a column labeled Attachment Details at its top.

Just under the image thumbnail and info you will see a RED line saying Delete Permanently.

click it and a question box will appear and ask if you really want to erase the image(s) with the warning that once you do so the erasure cannot be undone.

click yes and they are history.

EDIT: well, not quite true. You can only erase one at a time, but if you click multiple images as described above, then you can just click on the delete permanently line and they will be erased in the order that you selected them one at a time.

            83. Is there a way

for you to give me a screen shot of the media page after you have clicked on just one of the pictures?

I might be able to tell you how to proceed after that.

Meanwhile I’m gonna do this all over and make sure I did it right the last time.

                88. That's cause it ain't there.

You may or may not believe this but mine is different. Of course. Nothing can be simple with this place right now.

I see you have something I don’t. Your edit selection button is on the bottom left while mine is just below the dpi count in the Attachment Details bar on the right. My delete permanently button is just below that.

Is the delete permanently button below the edit selection button in your lower left?

If not, what happens when you edit selection? Is the delete a function of the edit on your version?

      49. Will the SV Type format be the same and will our Avatars and Aliases

be the same as before?  Or, will we have to re-register and reload our saved Avatar to be recognized to post.

Some of us, not so techie, will probably need to be prepared for what we will have to change before we can post with a new format.

        69. I would assume

that your alias is yours to choose the same as here.

Yes, you will have to re-register. We cannot migrate member info to the new site. So, you’ll have to register again, and I would be really surprised if you aren’t able to choose any alias you want with the same restrictions as those here.

As for your avatar, you should probably see if you have it stored on your computer or at a hosting site. If not, then you should make a copy of it by going into My JPR and selecting your profile and edit. Once you are in the edit profile dialog page, you can click on your avatar and copy it to your computer.

Then when you register on JPR 3.0, you can copy it to that site and it will be the same as it is here.

If you have any problems either finding your avatar on your device or copying it from your profile, send me a PM and I’ll try to help.

            107. Well, that'll be a pain.

In that I like many music genres that aren’t popular and don’t sound like “music” to many people (ambient, avant garde, dub-step, mash-up, etc.) Separate sub-groups are best. Plus it avoids one type of music over-running the rest such that not so well-known-music posts get lost quickly.

However, that is something that will not be public. Since those individuals were banned under the current TOS, they will probably not be allowed back in just because we are building a new site.
