WHO: Asymptomatic spread of COVID-19 is "very rare"

Coronavirus patients without symptoms aren’t driving the spread of the virus, World Health Organization officials said Monday, casting doubt on concerns by some researchers that the disease could be difficult to contain due to asymptomatic infections.
Some people, particularly young and otherwise healthy individuals, who are infected by the coronavirus never develop symptoms or only develop mild symptoms. Others might not develop symptoms until days after they were actually infected.
Preliminary evidence from the earliest outbreaks indicated that the virus could spread from person-to-person contact, even if the carrier didn’t have symptoms. But WHO officials now say that while asymptomatic spread can occur, it is not the main way it’s being transmitted.
“From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency’s Geneva headquarters. “It’s very rare.”
So then why the hell are we wearing masks?

Worked to reduce the spread? Is it because just the symptomatic individuals are spreading it and the masks/distancing reduce the spread?

I’ll just keep wearing a mask. I’m pretty sure they’ll contradict themselves again by next week.

the germaphobe industry is doing swimmingly well. Businesses are wiping down after each customer and still doing it despite recent evidence that surface contact is very rare for spreading it.
They just keep changing the message, almost like they were toying with us…

Here in my neck of the woods…
95% of people testing positive did not experience symptoms or so the article says.

“Pacific Seafood had hired workers from Ukraine and Serbia, but those employees arrived this week and had not yet started work when the outbreak was reported.”
why are they hiring in ukraine & serbia when we have so many unemployed & airports are supposedly basically shut down?
not that it would have been great to have been working there now, but in principle why?

Coughing or sneezing at work, your boss will send you home. Go by the testing center on the way home; now testing if you just have coughing or sneezing. And get a temperature check. The health department can get back with your boss.
Just to keep from catching a cold over a holiday, I tell my students to: Keep your hands washed with soap and sanitized with 70% alcohol and never tough your face out in public, unless using a paper tissue with the alcohol mixture poured on it. Keep the 70% wet paper towel in a zipped plastic bag to prevent evaporation.

“In a statement released early Tuesday morning, the WHO said that “current evidence suggests that most transmission of COVID-19 occurs from symptomatic people to others in close contact, when not wearing appropriate PPE.”
It added that while it is possible for asymptomatic people to spread the virus, “infection from cases without symptoms comes from a limited number of studies with small samples that are subject to possible recall bias,” and in most cases where asymptomatic spread was found, it couldn’t be ruled out that the person contracted the virus through other ways.”
