Let’s say you’re in the North Dakota National Guard and it’s time for your annual two week training adventure. No biggie. You’ll go to some state forest, set up your tent, spend a few days hiking around, playing soldier, grilling steaks, swapping stories around the campfire… Oops! Not so fast. Your governor is sending you to Texas, where you will do something along the US-Mexican border. It’s going to be hot. The media will be there, recording you for their exposees. Senators and governors and maybe even Donald Trump will be hanging around, so you will be under scrutiny. Scratch the idea of grilling steaks and drinking beer. Unless the VIPs want to visit you, in which case you’ll eat pretty good. No beer, though. Makes you want to reenlist, doesn’t it?

I lived there for something like 55 years and never knew that. Sure ND has trees along it rivers and in it various parks, but I wouldn’t call them forests. They are just a bunch of trees.

Q: What do you see when you look west from Minnesota?

        A: Montana.

Western North Dakota is hilly, but Montana is at a higher elevation. So yeah, with a good pair of binoculars and a clear day, you could see Montana from Minnesota. After all, it is only 400 miles
