I got a handwritten letter from a Jehovah’s Witness today. It was addressed to me, not just “occupant”. Very creepy since I don’t know anyone in the town it came from or any Jehovah’s Witnesses. I am an atheist so I would not be on a member roll of any type of competing church. I’m on the usual type of “lefty” mailing lists, like Nature Conservancy, Feeding America, Planned Parenthood etc. Would any of these groups actually sell names to a church? Anyone have an idea of how they got my name? (I’m not in the phone book either.)

      👿😇🤔

PS- the return address appears to be a private residence, not an actual church I could call and complain to.

tax rolls, property records. In my state, I think even drivers licenses are subject to public disclosure.

      @soryang

      I’m not a property owner so I don’t think that’s it.

I found some threads on Reddit about this. I guess it’s fairly common. They don’t go door to door anymore, just harass people by mail.

@pam2 Glad to hear they don’t come door to door anymore. I’ve had so much trouble with people coming to my door even after dark, that I had to put up a no trespassing sign. Some of my neighbors have too.

Due to the pandemic, the door-knocking, Watchtower peddling business model wasn’t working well for them. Not sure where they are getting the names & addresses from, but these seemingly handwritten letters are popping up all over. At least on your side of Earth’s crust. Fortunately, JW’s don’t believe in Hell, so I don’t get mail from them.

though ironic, and possibly even “blasphemous” from the JW perspectives, since they consider Jehova to be the only “legitimate” government, and pretty much all politics to be a form of idolatry. Can’t say they’re entirely wrong on that last part, since there certainly is cult like devotion for some politicians (i.e. Hillary or Trump, for the most obvious examples)

I am a registered voter at this address, so that’s possible. I don’t think it’s appropriate to give that info to churches though. First amendment anyone?

In some states for free, in others for a fee. I know this because I’ve worked in collections before(one does distasteful things to pay the rent sometimes). It’s a common skip-tracing tool.

until she moved away.  I told her from the start that I was an atheist, and so we chatted about other things.  I never saw the need to be unpleasant.  I got one of those letters a little while after she moved away, but easy enough to toss it.

Well, you are a nicer person than me. I wouldn’t let one in. I shredded the letter. I resisted the urge to send a rude response.

          As is her due.

The J.W. lady would always have a companion who looked mystified/uncomfortable when I said hey, I am still an atheist.  We would discuss stuff like the difference in health care between the US and Germany, where she was from. Germany was better.  I doubt very much that I am nicer than you, I just was fine with talking to her, and I always reiterated my atheism, and she was always ok, cool, and we talked about everything but religion.  Maybe I was trying to convert HER.

My feeling is that she and her friends were not trying to hurt me or anything.  Believe me, not all the people in my life are sitting around saying ya know, I think djean should go to heaven!  And she never asked me for money or to vote for Hillary, so that’s already better than voter outreach and stuff.

Too many people see Jehovah’s Witness walking around the neighborhood knocking on doors. Some, not all, would take their clothes off and answer the knock when it was their turn.

As far as getting a name with an address, besides public records, private companies do make a business collecting information and selling it. These list do include name, address, phone number(s) and other demographics like are you a homeowner/renter, how many cars you have, in some cases where you work and social media. Privacy is no longer a right.

They’ve either flown the coup on the religion (one nearby Kingdom Hall has been closed for a year), or the whole “limited number of JW’s going to meet God” has been reached! Now all they have to do is pay someone to lurk discussion groups and try to get personal information from other sources. They historically have had to get quotas as to how many good deeds they could do. Many must feel lost now. I felt that way when I tried to rekindle a missed childhood with my cousins, all because their mom wanted them distanced from us little kids.

My mom used to say, “Tell em you’re Catholic! They hate THEM!”

Hell, no... I'm not giving up...

All I had to do was say “Oh, I’m sorry, I am Catholic!” (no I was not), and every time they would apologize and leave.  I still do not know why that worked.

In central Illinois.  I moved there after living my first 20 years in Philly.   I am pretty sure that the two things were sort of interchangeable.  After all, when I asked where I could buy ricotta cheese in order to make lasagna, I was advised that ricotta cheese was weird and also unavailable, and didn’t I know that cottage cheese was what I should be using any way. (I ended up buying ricotta cheese from a little Italian restaurant out of town; they ordered extra from their wholesaler).  I think I felt less culture clash when I worked in Japan.  Anyway, when I said I was Catholic, the salesmen would actually turn a whiter shade of pale.

I got another letter yesterday. According to the sender the answers to all our problems are in the Bible. I had no idea.
