New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern—hailed by progressives around the world for her government’s response to the Covid-19, gun violence, and climate crises—has won a landslide re-election victory as vote counting in the country’s general election came to a close on Saturday.

The New Zealand Herald reports Ardern’s center-left Labour Party surged to certain victory, winning 49.1% of the vote and crushing the center-right National Party in an “abolute drubbing.” The Nats received just 26.8% of votes cast, which means Labour will enjoy a 64 to 35 seat advantage in the 120-seat parliament.

Cuba and Vietnam to name two.  What is it those two countries have in common?  It is a right-wing government….(checks Wikipedia to make sure)…no.

Is it complete reliance on free market capitalism?   Again, no.

Damn, this is tough to figure out.

Why have Brazil and the U. S. fucked things up royally, yet Cuba, Vietnam and New Zealand were able to tame COVID?

      Anyone?  Bueller?   Bueller?

@gzeush But this is America!, as Joe Biden would say, and we’re not even supposed to consider that such a thing could ever be far more successful than our own fucked up system. Our media certainly refuses to even think about it, much less talk about it.

But who can blame them? Think of all of that lost HMO and Big Pharma ad revenue. And since all three of those countries have some form of true public broadcasting system, there’s an unthinkable remedy for media silence as well. Of course, then we wouldn’t have multimillionaire TV news talking heads anymore, now would we? Ours would have to retire, or learn how to actually practice journalism, which is also unthinkable to them.

And no surprise at all. Arden led the best response to the Covid pandemic in the the Western democratic world, and New Zealanders are very well aware of that, and should be proud of their accomplishment. Why in the world would they want to let the bloody Nationals in to screw that up?

America has the exact opposite record, which is why our incumbent leader is likely to go down in a humiliating defeat to an opponent who most people think has dementia or something else fundamentally wrong with him.
