    With Love, Please?

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

    A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to start an online community, and a time to hand it off to people who aren’t exhausted

    ^^^^^^^^^^^
    This is that time.

JPR began in troubled times, born from Mary’s discussions with Jim Peterson (Jackpine Radical on DU) about the need for a new online forum that wasn’t run by, say, the vindictive and petty husband of Hillary Clinton’s former campaign treasurer. A place where truth is OK.

Mary roped me in (it was clear I was about to get kicked off of DU), then Matariki joined us for a while, and we all made a site. And it attracted some quality folks. (And a few trolls, of course.)

Mary’s been the heart, soul, and brains of JPR since it began. I dropped off, for the most part, a year or so ago – combination of a dying family member, other family being ill and getting hospitalized, work craziness, blah, blah, blah. It was tough for me to put much effort into anything outside of what was in front of my face. But Mary powered through and kept the thing going, even while facing her own personal challenges. And I admire her for that!

A lot has happened since JPR started. Many of us on JPR have known for years that the Democratic Party were no friends of the 99%, and that we’d been badly damaged by both major political parties shilling for the 1%. A party of wolves, and a party of wolves in sheeps clothing. We knew it, but most left-leaning Americans did not.

Today, the vast majority of America knows that both political parties are deeply corrupt and share the goal of stealing from the poor to give to the rich. All Hell seems to have broken loose as Americans abandon the establishment and move right or left in an attempt to find something that works for them, or at least stops assaulting them.

Donald Trump is now President (which is insane beyond words), thanks to the DNC Superdelegates forcing an establishment candidate on us. But at the same time that Trump and his extended crazy-right crime family are viewed favorably by one-third of our country, two-thirds of us now favor Medicare for All. And most of us now also favor a livable minimum wage and other sane policies that Progressives have long known are needed. The far-right might be in power today, but it’s Progressive ideas that are winning big, and it’s only a matter of time before the dreams of the majority become flesh — if we can hold on to our right to vote (a bit wounded but still mostly intact), and don’t start a civil (or uncivil) war, etc. Holding things together until sanity becomes law may not be so easy, but it’s a big part of our job now.

JPR was not begun specifically to back Bernie Sanders, but it did collect some good money for him, and the beliefs and spirit of JPR’s membership are largely the same as his.  I feel that we owe an enormous debt to Bernie Sanders for stepping up at the right time, with the right words and the right life story to match his words. His clear and honest voice reminded us that we can have good things, and we’ll get them back by being good and decent to one another.

“The revolution comes when two strangers smile at each other”
    – Bernie Sanders

    Bernie is our Bhodisattva.

But enough of my rambling; it’s time to say what I set out to say.

After an amazing amount of effort by Mary, and a fair bit by Matariki and myself, the time has come for JPR’s Wheel to turn. It is time to bring on fresh folks to become JPR’s new benevolent overlords. Henceforth, Land of Enchantment and So Far From Heaven will be watering and pruning the place. (I’m sure it can fertilize itself.) I know them both well, they are good people, and I expect that they will do a great job. I look forward to seeing the future they orchestrate in partnership with every one of JPR’s other members.

As to me… I have no intention of permanently disappearing, but I will likely remain “out of the fray” until my time and my spirit have enough extra space for it. America’s come a long way in the short time since JPR was founded. And I believe that JPR’s had a little to do with that. And further, I believe that our site has helped people to find camaraderie; to celebrate the good, process the bad, and just shoot the breeze. And for that I thank Mary, Matariki, the hamsters, and every single person of good intentions who’s been a member of our community.

Now let’s go forward and win, with love, OK?

      5. Thank you!

Thanks for all the hard work you and Mary have done on this site.  As someone who has never run a site I have no idea what goes into it but I’m sure it’s a lot of work.  JPR has been a refuge for me after I had my eyes opened about the nature of the Democratic party during the 2016 primary.  I know a lot of people were onto them long before that but while I wasn’t entirely blind to their faults, I had no idea of the extent of their corruption.  I never got kicked off of the other site (that I’m aware of) but it became obvious that it wasn’t the place for me and I just stopped going there.

Anyway, I’m rambling.  Thanks again for all your hard work and I hope things in your offline world improve!

This place gave me a new home after DU’s betrayal of what it was supposed to stand for.

It is my dearest wish that you will get some peace, and rest, Manny. Some day I hope that rascal Third-Way Manny will stop by and give us some good belly laughs.

You and Mary are heroes. Peace be with you both.

      Thanks for everything

Think of all the “moderates” who, throughout history, have failed to oppose state-sanctioned aggression, oppression, and abuse, from slavery to child labor, while maligning those who call for change as dangerous and misguided, violent radicals. And yet, in retrospect, when a renewed social contract is established as the new normal, the unlawful actions that brought about these societal shifts are turned into mythical tales of nationalistic heroism and dates for kids to memorize at school.

      27. You and Mary have made a vision a reality

that got so many of us through the challenges of the 2016 elections, both before, and after.  Having a safe haven for Bernie supporters was a necessity after we saw the way things were going with the Dem Party and You, Mary and Matariki stepped up to the challenge and made this site a special place of refuge and enlightenment.

Throughout all the personal challenges that both you and Mary have had, you continued to keep the site going and growing.  Keeping those greedy hamsters fed, as the site grew has got to have been a huge responsibility, while you were dealing with those personal challenges, and you will always be special in meeting that challenge that has kept so many of us sane in these past years.

Hope you will be able to post here more, now that the hamsters are in the new owner’s hands.  Look forward to seeing the new site and wish the new owners all the best as they deal with the challenges of the Midterms and what follows.  They have a big job ahead in keeping the tone that you and Mary set for the site, but I’m hopeful that Both Your and Mary’s legacy will always be a guideline for JPR as it moves forward.

      —-
