BOISE, Idaho — Idaho Gov. Brad Little activated hundreds of Idaho National Guard members and other personnel on Tuesday as the surge in COVID-19 cases – almost entirely among the unvaccinated – threaten to overwhelm the state’s hospitals.
Little warned that Idaho’s entire healthcare system is “teetering on the brink” of implementing crisis standards of care, where beds, nurses, ventilators and other care could be earmarked for those most likely to survive.
“On a daily call with hospitals this morning, we heard there are only four standard adult ICU beds available in the entire state. Where hospitals have converted other spaces to be used as contingency ICU beds, those are filling up too,” Little said. “We are dangerously close to activating statewide crisis standards of care – a historic step that means Idahoans in need of healthcare could receive a lesser standard of care or may be turned away altogether. In essence, someone would have to decide who can be treated and who cannot. This affects all of us, not just patients with COVID-19.”
Up to 150 guardsmen will provide support for medical facilities, performing screenings, lab work, and other logistical duties that can help lift the burden on nurses and doctors. An additional 200 medical and administrative personnel will be made available to Idaho through a contract with the U.S. General Services Administration.

This seems like the very apt use of something on the order of a Federal Emergency Management Agency, if such a thing could exist. And it seems like the problems Covid has caused would have been a good application of congressional power in making such an agency.

I don’t think Mills has called out the National Guard yet, but according to some hospital employees I know… We have damn few beds left for anything – and not nearly enough staff.
Maybe things will improve… But they aren’t looking good right now. I imagine it is the same in most states.
Yet… The suffering and death of many, many people will be profitable for a few. Yes, those hospital bills could damn well be what finishes them off. It is… Insanely cruel and sick that, even now, some few among the wealthy continue to profit out of this misery
Forget Afghanistan and the Taliban and even ISIS for a while. We’ve got our own evil fucks right here at home to deal with. And we had better, before they find an even better way to make a profit off of our deaths.
But, eh. Gotta have those health insurance companies, private plans, work plans… Capitalism, democracy and shit.. Or something. Biden’s favorite people who he calls “risk takers” were also Bush’s favorite people; “the haves and the have mores” as he put it.
Shrug. As long as these entitled fuckers who are almost completely insulated from any real consequence of significance run the show…
The show will go on. Nothing will fundamentally change.
