As the dust settles, pundits, political operatives and party insiders are already swarming to tell the story of what really happened in 2020. They’ll zero in on the smallest margins, the most unlikely Trump-to-Biden swing voters, the affluent white suburbanites. But that’s not the story of this election.

The exit polls are still being finalized, but as of now they show that working people — Black, Brown and White families making under $100,000, along with the vast majority of young people — delivered Biden his victory. Not only did they vote for him in overwhelming numbers, they also knocked on doors, made calls and carried out the hard work of democracy during a pandemic. These voters are the heart and the future of a massive progressive movement inside and outside of the Democratic Party, and it is to them that Joe Biden and Kamala D. Harris must answer.

Trump has been a disaster for poor and working people, so they used voting as a tool to fight back. Hammered by a government by, of and for the one percent, brutalized by covid-19 inaction and economic disaster, pummeled with racist rhetoric and white supremacist violence, the people have delivered a rebuke to President Trump. But the result was also a warning for Biden: In the midst of overlapping national crises, his administration has a critical window to deliver for the working people and young people who got him elected. If he fails to meet the moment — if he seeks instead to return us to a “normalcy” marked by corporate handouts and extreme inequality — then the next Trump might be far more dangerous than the one we just defeated. We can see hints of this already in the way voters of color — perennially taken for granted by the Democratic Party — shifted marginally toward Trump in 2020. Though they still carried Biden to victory by a 46-point margin, the lesson is clear: The Democratic Party ignores its base at its own peril.

A ground swell will do well to keep telling him so, too. Why? Because he doesn’t want to respect our issues. They affect all of us. She knows it. So do we.

Biden got fucking elected!   The GOP and the Vichy Dems will happily work together!  And Biden will proceed with austerity and war while proclaiming he has a mandate.  We will hear that Most Important Election ever” bullshit in 2022 and 2024 and 2026 and 2028 and……..

Is Nina Turner going to start that unity crap?  FFS.

Her conclusion is clearly a warning, and maybe a prophecy:

Politically, a return to “normalcy” is simply a circuitous route back to Trumpism. So-called normalcy has never worked if you are poor or among the barely middle class and it will not work now. Being better than Trump is a low bar. This moment demands — and the citizens of this nation deserve — leadership with a vision to provide for the people. Anything less is unacceptable. The Democratic Party’s future and the future of America depend on it.

I know who Nina Turner is. Not personally, but she was my State Senator. Anything less is unacceptable. She has no illusions about Joe Biden and the Vichy Dems. She’s making a demand that she knows will not be met. I’m surprised to see WaPo print it.

She also accurately describes the election. It was the working class who showed up with enough votes in the right places to put Biden over the top, or more accurately, just to dump Trump. Nina being Nina, she was also careful to mention the working class white voters who voted against Trump(4 or 5 million more of them than did so in 2016), and the greater number of Black and Latino voters who voted for Trump this year compared to 2016.

Turner knows damned well the Democrats are very unlikely to deliver for working people, but none of them will be able to say she didn’t tell them so before Biden announced his first disastrous Cabinet pick, and before Pelosi and Schumer refuse to even consider measures that would help working people. She also predicted these same working class people who just dumped Trump are the same people who will throw the Democrats out after they fail to do what those people elected them to do.

I just hope she leaves that worthless party for good and continues speaking truth to power.

@ohiobarbarian.  I don’t have a subscription to that site, so I did not read all of it.  I was just feeling mildly aghast that Turner might have just given up and is going along.  I don’t think Biden will do anything (good) for working people at all.    But crap like the TPP will be presented as such.

And, because she has no illusions as to how the Democratic king makers machine has produced a mistake of a viable and successful candidate like Trump-a-Dump, this is but one of the first public calls to document what needs to happen from here.

I have said it before, and will keep saying that a potent resolution to this is a viable… really viable alternative to either failed parties of this failed system. Keep your eyes on what the Movement for the People’s Party is doing to get 50 state ballot access for the mid-term elections and presidential candidate in 4 more years. We have everything to gain by developing a vision whilst understanding that Biden’s business as usual is not going to work, but drive the same number of people who delivered this election to have something we can really stand behind. Why? It’s the Issues.

I think she was a speaker at the People’s Party conference this summer. I’m pretty sure she knows the Dems are a lost cause.

@pam2 I think she is just setting the ground work here. Nobody will be able to come back and accuse her of saying nothing if she does permanently bolt the Party. I don’t know if she will, but I hope she does.
