At this rate they will be approaching early New York numbers before long.

Not that I should be throwing stones. Clearly the government here in Oregon is nervous and we had our worst day ever today though a lot better than the Southeast, for the moment. Opened up too early. Too much pressure I’m sure on our Governor, whether from small business, or looking at tax revenues tank. Now we all get the worst possible outcome, or maybe some significant fraction of such.

      They mostly have it contained.
But then almost everyone wears a mask in public. Masks work, regardless what commando lady says.

The Japanese government couldn’t order businesses to close down , but some prefectural (“state”) governments in relatively unaffected prefectures ordered some entertainment businesses like pachinko parlors to close down to dissuade people from other prefectures from patronizing them. And Tokyo had closed many pachinko parlors as a precaution (which have since been reopened under certain conditions). Travel within Japan was not restricted, but people were advised not to cross prefectural borders for “non-essential” trips (which still applies to some effect). And Japan has, for the time being, closed its borders to foreign visitors from more than 100 countries. This can even apply permanent residents who travel to restricted countries for pleasure or non-essential business. That includes the US.

I should also add that major sporting events scheduled for this year, like the Olympics and the semi-annual high school baseball tournament, have been canceled or postponed, and they have just now started the professional baseball season, to empty stadiums. The national sumo tournaments of March and May, and mostly likely July as well, have taken place in empty arenas. And from what I7ve heard, the J-League professional soccer teams are also playing to empty houses.

NASCAR has crowds in the stadiums now,the Kentucky Derby will run in the fall with seated spectators, and there’s talk of letting  high school and college football begin as usual even though basically the entire Clemson team has gotten sick from close contact in practice.

Gotta have those circuses y’know,to distract the folks without bread.

Most people in Wuhan were already wearing masks when the outbreak occurred, to protect against pollution.

The label on a box of masks says this:

Warning: This product is not a respirator and will not provide any protection against covid-19 or other viruses and contaminants.

“Warning: This product is not a respirator and will not provide any protection against covid-19 or other viruses and contaminants.”

That reads like something someone made up. The lawyers would have fun with that, if it were put on a box of masks.

Even Politifact says so, and then proceeds to try to convince you that it doesn’t mean what it means. They cite ‘health officials’ who say facemasks “may” provide source control.
