The evacuation of wounded Ukrainian troops from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol is under way, Volodomyr Zelenskiy confirmed, with more than 260 fighters transported out of the plant.

“We hope that we will be able to save the lives of our guys,” the Ukrainian president said of the evacuation.

“The supreme military command ordered the commanders of the units stationed at Azovstal to save the lives of the personnel,” Reuters reported the general staff said in a statement on Facebook. “Efforts to rescue defenders who remain on the territory of Azovstal continue.”

In his nightly video address, Volodomyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine would fight to save the lives of the Azovstal fighters. “There are severely wounded ones among them. They’re receiving care. Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes alive,” he said.

      Waste not, want not!

"Sometimes when I try to understand a person's motives, I play a little game. I assume the worst. What's the worst reason they could possibly have for saying what they say and doing what they do? Then I ask myself, 'How well does that reason explain what they say and what they do?'" GRRM

They’re going to the Donetsk People’s Republic first. Where next will likely depend if they are Ukrainian Army, Azov Battalion (or other paramilitary), or mercenaries.

More to learn in the coming hours and days – it’s now 1:40 AM in Ukraine.

As you probably can tell, I am still incredulous about the killing that had been going on since 2014, and the evident ramping up of forces to do some more killing, in the Donbass, with nary a word from the now bleating global community.  As if it never happened.  I am not disregarding Ukrainian lives, I am saying that evidently the lives in the Donbass did not count at all.

And residential areas in Donbass are STILL being shelled and civilians killed, and it doesn’t make Western news.

I’ve seen the road sign to Donetsk several times near Dnipro, and it always made me think of the (then) ignored and mostly frozen war there. Most recently last December . . .

The military commanders report that the Azov soldiers who surrendered have already been taken to Novoazovsk, at the moment they are being taken to the district hospital. In total, about 300 nationalists surrendered.

The commander of “Azov” says that they’ve completed their task and he wants to save the lives of his subordinates.

According to the commander: “The Mariupol defenders have completed their task despite all the difficulties. For 82 days they drew fire from overwhelming forces of the enemy and allowed the Ukrainian army to regroup, train more personnel and receive a large number of weapons from partner countries.

No weapon will work without professionally trained soldiers, making them the most valuable element of the army.

In order to save lives, the entire Mariupol garrison is carrying out the approved decision of the Supreme Military Command and hopes for the support of the Ukrainian people”.

Way to whitewash being completely surrounded and not being stormed because of human shields.  How brave.

There is no way to unblock Azovstal by military means.

“Together, the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the Border Guard Service launched an operation to rescue the defenders of Mariupol who were blocked on the territory of the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works. On May 16, 53 seriously wounded people were evacuated from Azovstal to a medical facility in Novoazovsk for medical care, ” she said.

According to Maliar, another 211 people were taken to Olenevka through the humanitarian corridor, and an exchange procedure will be carried out for their further return home.

If there was the possibility of them ending up in Russian hands, and then freed sooner rather than later* if they “told all”, then I could see Azov commanders wanting them dead. The trick being that the foreigners likely thought ahead, and made it implausible for them to get all get “killed by Russia and its allies” all at once.

And if you don’t take them all out you can’t get away with executing just the top ranked foreigners. Not being idiots, they likely stayed close to their friends.

*Given current relations between Russia and the West, any Western prisoners will want to get home instead of chancing that relations suddenly got a lot worse.

Russia made that very clear early on that they will be considered criminals rather than prisoners of war.

MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. None of the mercenaries the West is sending to Ukraine to fight for the nationalist regime will enjoy the right of combatants under international humanitarian law, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

“I wish to make an official statement that none of the mercenaries the West is sending to Ukraine to fight for the nationalist regime in Kiev can be considered as combatants in accordance with international humanitarian law or enjoy the status of prisoners of war,” Konashenkov stressed.

He warned that all foreign mercenaries, detained in Ukraine, would be brought to justice on criminal charges.

“At best, they can expect to be prosecuted as criminals. We are urging all foreign citizens who may have plans to go and fight for Kiev’s nationalist regime to think a dozen times before getting on the way,” Konashenkov said.
