Violent racism, Canadian-style in the forum Canada 3 months ago
Commercial fisherman are a very disgruntled lot. They used to be part of a big free-for-all and the indigenous people, called “first nations” in Canada, received no special consideration. Now the fish are scarce and indigenous people often get a share by court order. I hear the fisherman complain about this because they sometimes use ham radio…[Read more]

Violent racism, Canadian-style in the forum Canada 3 months ago
Nova Scotia RCMP are under fire for failing to stop an angry mob from attacking two rural storage facilities holding Mi’kmaq lobster, throwing rocks, setting a van ablaze and restraining fishermen in one of the most violent confrontations yet in a dispute over the fishery.
RCMP say a group of around 200 people blocked employees from leaving a l…[Read more] -

Canada’s Green party disappoints me again in the forum Canada 3 months ago
At one point after her election, she was asked if she supported the progressive policies offered by Lascaris and Haddad, and her reply was a coy “it’s all in our platform” non-response. Yeah, I’m sure there’s loads of stuff in the current platform that will eventually be nuanced out of existence. Yet another centre-leftish…[Read more]

I hadn’t spent much time following them, but she wasn’t even on my radar. You’re right about checking the Idpol boxes, the CBC article when announcing her victory prominently feature those credentials as well as calling her a ‘moderate’. Just what we fucking need. If Lascaris had won I would’ve switched parties. Who knows by next election, but…[Read more]

Canada’s Green party disappoints me again in the forum Canada 3 months ago
Although I’ve been a registered NDP member for decades, I decided to join the Green party recently to support Dmitri Lascaris, a prominent ecosocialist who has for years been vocal about many of the issues I hold dear, including support for Palestine. And he came so close. But alas, the hand-picked successor to Elizabeth May — Annamie Paul –…[Read more]

Thank you for the update @alcina. Dmitri would have made a great leader not just for the Greens and Canada but for the world. Though not Canadian and just a by-stander, I was watching this race from a distance with hope…..I hope Dmitri continues in politics….If you have the opportunity, please keep us posted.

Hey, @passionateprogressive. Yes, Dmitri as the Green leader would have really changed the political landscape here. It would have been such a joy to have a truly…

The ugly face of Canadian racism in the forum Canada 3 months ago
It’s appalling, and as I said, not unique. A few years ago, my partner and I attended a talk about Indigenous health services. There were several people there talking about their experiences in Toronto hospitals, which were all horribly negative. A few days later, at a senior staff meeting at his hospital, my partner mentioned this…[Read more]

As she lay dying in a Joliette, Que., hospital bed, an Atikamekw woman clicked her phone on and broadcast a Facebook Live video appearing to show her being insulted and sworn at by hospital [nursing] staff.
Joyce Echaquan’s death on Monday prompted an immediate outcry from her home community of Manawan, about 250 kilometres north of Montreal, and…[Read more]

Either way, I would definitely do something like that to such a memorial. My uncle was in the first platoon of the US Army to reach Dachau. I heard about the SS, what they did, and what he did to them, first hand.
