British Columbia: The ‘Wild West’ of Canadian Political Cash

As the premier of British Columbia, Christy Clark is on the public payroll, pulling down a salary of 195,000 Canadian dollars in taxpayer money. But if that were not enough, she also gets an annual stipend of up to 50,000 Canadian dollars — nearly $40,000 — from her party, financed by political contributions.

Personal enrichment from the handouts of wealthy donors, some of whom have paid tens of thousands of dollars to meet with her at private party fund-raisers? No conflict of interest here, according to a pair of rulings last year by the province’s conflict-of-interest commissioner — whose son works for Ms. Clark.

“B.C. is the wild west,” said Duff Conacher, a founder of Democracy Watch, a Canadian civic organization that has petitioned the Supreme Court of British Columbia to void the commissioner’s decision. The group argues that there is a “reasonable apprehension of bias” because the commissioner’s son is a deputy minister in Ms. Clark’s cabinet. The court heard arguments in the case on Friday.

    1. Compared to what goes on in the US, this seems like nothing

But there should never be graft. A penny is wrong

      4. That's just the tip of the iceburg for that bunch though Mary

They’ve been grifting the province for over a decade. If we don’t get them out there won’t be anything left because its also the wild west for rampant resource extraction.  Massive clearcuts, no replanting logs all shipped to China. Huge tailing “ponds” the size of seas, one breached already. Mines owned by china and lots of Chinese workers. Contaminated waste allowed to be dumped into watersheds. Fracking. Pipelines. Lots of money into Liberal coffers but no jobs or money for the province.

        5. Damn!

Looks like no one is safe.

This isn’t working. We all need a new way to run things

    2. Maybe not illegal, but certainly unethical

I seriously hope the NDP don’t fuck up their chance again, because with the overwhelming theme of ‘change’ in the air, taking down the BC Neo-Libs should be a given.

      3. It was a given last time too, that election was too bizarre

as well as heartbreaking. I think John’s working up some fire in his belly, there are many of us that told him he needs to hammer on the Liberals record from from the beginning, not just the last term. All the crooked crony deals and meanness right from the start.
