Does your bird have any weird quirks or habits?

My Quaker, Jewels, lifts his left foot and rubs it inside his beak. He keeps the one toenail on the foot from getting long, and I rarely have to clip it.

He also throws his Avicake off the cage when he wants to be picked up.

During hormonal season, my Green Cheek Conure, Casey, plays under a towel and is talking jibberish the whole time. He is highly supervised while playing under the small hand towel. If I’m away, I remove the towel and he has no access to it.

Also, Casey talks constantly while in his night cage. I’ve heard him go through his complete vocabulary even at 2:00 am. He has a large vocabulary of at least 30 words or more. It’s like he’s practicing.

He also makes a coughing sound and blowing nose sound.

      1. No a quirk but funny – had

a Mynah bird years ago.  He would greet me in the morning with – :Where the hell is my wig”.

        5. That is so cool

My user name comes from a neighbor who named her mynah after it and years later named one of my greys with the name as well – such a trooper being born w/ loads of defects – I miss him a lot.

      2. My caique, Gilbert, is just a mass of weirdness

We’ll start with the nose-picking and nail-biting. And then there’s the piggy-squealing when he finds a new hole to stick his head in (eg, behind a pillow, inside a shoebox, inside a shoe).

He’s also obsessed with my partner’s sweaty socks, but only when my partner is wearing them. He rubs against them to pick up that manly smell, all the while piggy-squealing and huffing.

He also likes to say his name over and over and over while bobbing up and down. The record so far is 45 times.

When he wants to be picked up, he says, “Go poo poo.” Years ago, he used to say that when he actually had to poop, and I would carry him to his perch. But at some point, he realized it meant he would be picked up. So now, if he says it and I don’t pick him up, he’ll sometimes fly over and try to poop on my head just to teach me a lesson. On the plus side, when he really has to go, he’ll usually fly to his perch himself. At least he learned something….

        4. Ha my grey years ago did the same 'poo-poo' routine

It sure does get the attention.

such a cool coot (nickname for the little bastards) and strange similarly how my apricot head caique just loves to tear into my dirty work shirts and perform her Yoga Routine. They are dirty no more with the job being done with but still pull them out for her enjoyment

More Chortlin & purrs from that one – no talking though with her or her partner. and funny… she’s a nose picker too. must keep those passages clear of icky bird boogies

does your caique have any relation to Marty Feldman?

wow, as an aside; I did not know this when I looked him up on the wikipedia

….Politically, Marty Feldman has been described as an “avowed socialist”[11] telling one interviewer “I’m a socialist by conviction, if not by lifestyle”[12] and another “I’m a socialist from way back but in order to pay my back taxes I have to live in America to earn enough money to pay the back tax I owe to the socialist government that I voted in.”[4] He joked later that when a Labour cabinet minister said to him “Of course you vote Labour,” Feldman replied, “No I don’t because I’m a socialist!”[13] However, he generally did not seriously discuss politics in public. An exception was when during a promotional tour for The Last Remake of Beau Geste he denounced Anita Bryant’s campaign against homosexuality.[11] He was an atheist….

          7. She's adorable!

I had a WBC for a few years. He was a rescue and it turned out he was quite ill. But the 3 years I had him were wonderful for both of us. He had an interesting “trick”: To get attention, he would fart. Apparently his previous owners didn’t give him much attention except when he did that. The rest of the time, he masturbated. So the little guy spent the first month with me farting and wanking until he finally realized there were other joys to be had. (Then again, a male acquaintance told me that that would probably be his dream life….) Anyway, these little bastards (yeah, I call them that too) are great, aren’t they?

As for Marty Feldman: No, Gilbert is not related. In fact, he’s named after Gilbert Gottfried. Both are loud and somewhat annoying, but very entertaining. And I actually did know that about MF. Saw an interview with him once on BBC or some such. Fascinating and extremely intelligent man. Died way too soon.

And finally, found this video the other day. Wow. Very smart little mynah bird:

        10. Oh yes the nose picking and trying to get my hangnails, my Quaker does

that too. One time I took Jewels into an office where I worked, I was reading his body language and knew he had to poop. I put him over the trash can where he did his business. My coworkers were cooing over how smart he was because I asked if he had to go poo poo first.

Caique are hilarious and very smart. Thank you for sharing! It sounds like Gilbert is a great little bird.

Casey loves to say his name over and over. Plus, we call him Caser which he says too. Jewels whispers all of his words.

      3. used to have blue fronted amazons

that tended to practice their vocab during the night, under their sheets.

I can’t remember if psitichosis is the one that makes a bird constantly rub their poor itchy beak (usu. on the wire of their cage), which I highly doubt in the case which you described, maybe just a curious habit – but found another resource to add to my bookmark collection to look through some more on.  More good sites these days all of a sudden to reference to :)

      6. Jerry my senegal parrot weaves back and forth

when he wants to get out of his cage. But sometimes, he weaves back and forth when he’s already out of his cage and he wants me to pick him up. It’s like flying or walking over to me is too much trouble, even if he just left my shoulder on his own steam a few minutes prior.  I still have to come and get him.

          15. If anyone here knows a breeder or someone who needs to rehome a female…

Please let me know, I am desperate to find Jack a mate before he is totally bald.

Nothing I have tried is working and he is getting worse. The vet says it must be

sexual frustration and the only cure is a mate. If I can’t get him to stop plucking

I may start pulling my hair out, and then we can both be bald.

      21. My brother's Tres Maria has several quirks

most of which he encourages (not always a good thing) – but the weirdest one is the almost constant purring or repetitive humming noise she makes.

A very low pitched ‘hmm- hmm -hmm’ that seems to come from her throat or chest.

What’s funny about it is that because she spends a lot of time on my brother’s shoulder, he makes a similar sound – all the time. Whether she is on his shoulder or not.

So I guess she trained him. :)

            24. As far as talking, it depends on the species and the individual bird.

Green cheek Conure are not supposed to talk very much, but mine has talked since I brought him home. African Greys are excellent talkers and usually have incredible vocalizations. These birds can do both.

I’ve looked after Feloneous before. She gets bored really easily. Fortunately, she likes bird videos on YouTube – but only other yellow heads or Max the Cockatoo; we have to be careful with Max because he cusses and my brother doesn’t want her picking up foul language (yes, I’m rolling my eyes). She doesn’t like any other birds, no matter how chatty they are.

                    28. Interesting. My Green Cheek also likes bird YouTube videos.

lol regarding the swearing. You just never know what they’ll pick up. It’s not usual for them not to want to be around another bird. Mine like being part of the flock but if they get to close a fight will ensue. It takes constant supervision when they are off their cages. Casey is also in love with Jewels but it’s not mutual.

                      29. Oh, just the videos! Sorry for the confusion!

She only likes some birds on the videos.

I’m not sure how she does around other birds – I’ve only seen one interaction; when I went with my brother to the vet and there was another double yellow there. She seemed interested in that bird, but both humans were very cautious about getting too close.

Feloneous survived a severe bout of e-coli about 5 years ago (she’s about 30 years) and said brother is hyper-freaked about her getting sick or catching something else.

                        30. No problem. Caution is good.

E-coli. It’s a wonder she survived. Hyper- freaked. I can relate to that. If they get sick and we don’t act right away. They can be dead pretty quickly. Also, it is very difficult to find a qualified bird vet, and once you find them, you don’t let go. I think my vet thought I was crazy because I would see things that he couldn’t see during examination and diagnostics.  We figured it out but it took a while.

                        31. So true about the speed that they decline.

Feloneous managed to ingest a microscopic bit of metal (brother thinks it came from a metal nail file he had dropped on the floor) and she went wonky neurologically. Couldn’t maintain her balance enough to stand securely, which I’m told is kind of the kiss of death for birds.

We found a vet here (he recently moved to Las Vegas) who is pretty brilliant. Got Feloneous on gabapentin, which stabilized her balance. She had to take it for over a month, before the tiny bit of metal passed through her system (actually, I think she enjoyed the process because she got to eat foods she doesn’t normally get – the idea was to ‘grab and push’ the bit of metal out with bulk).

                        32. Wow, that's serious stuff. You were lucky that you found a vet so

competent. Up here in Northern Nevada, good bird vets are few and some are extremely competent. Others, not do much. My birds vet is amazing. He is no spring chicken. I asked him how we could recruit more bird vets to the area. He said it was a problem because most avian vet graduates go to CA or FL. Those are pretty difficult areas for Nevada to compete.

My Quaker was having issues that would show up on the weekend. I would get him into the vet, and the vet would say can’t find anything wrong. Then one Friday afternoon I came home and my husband was mopping the floor and I could hardly breathe. We both have asthma. He had been using ammonia since we put in a new floor. The guy that installed told the floor told him to use ammonia. I talked to the vet that next week and he said ammonia is hell on their systems and to stop using it. We stopped using it immediately. We had used it for quite awhile. In 2010, our vet prescribed a nebulizer with saline twice a day for 15 minutes. We set up a small fish tank and hooked the nebulizer to it. It took him right out of it. He also prescribed an anti inflammatory. I rarely use the anti inflammatory anymore. He is still using the nebulizer but it is only once a day for 7 minutes. This is an abbreviated version. The only supplement I give both my birds is DMG. He has maintained his weight, and is as healthy as he has ever been. My Green Cheek Conure is the healthiest Conure my vet has seen in his practice.

Good to know about the ammonia – I’ll tell my brother. I know he doesn’t use any chemicals on her cages, but he does use floor cleaners and rug shampoos and the like in the room.

                  40. Yes she does.

I got a call out of the blue, a woman wanted to know if I knew

anyone who would take her bird. She couldn’t make the time

to deal with her because they were gone every weekend and

it was hard to find someone to take care of her. I ask what the

re-homing fee was and she said she wanted the bird to have a good

home and she would give her to the right person.

I told her I would love to take Emma and here she is. I’ll have to thank

my groomer for giving Joann my number.

      44. Tons.

General is a male African Grey and he talks a lot, does every sound under the sun. when he feels like it he can whistle Bridge over the river Kui, not just a few bars but the whole thing. (when he feels like it)

We had a Yorky Hampton, in my wife’s voice he will whistle and say “Hampy come here” and then when Hampton would run to his cage and look up he laughs in my voice.

It was way cool, for a long time, now when he does it, not so much, cuz we lost Hampton a few years ago. Used to trip us out, we’ve grown now we look at each and smile, cuz we know General loved Hampton also.

        45. I love this story!

Thank you so much. It is a little rocky here, we are in the getting to know

you stage. I’ve never had a Grey before and am just a little out of my

comfort zone. I hope one day I can have a good relationship with my

        Emma.

          47. Best advice I could give.

Remember he is a companion bird and he wants Companionship.

Probably likes cartoons, it’s weird but my loves him some scrambled eggs.
