It’s supposed to have a different (earthier?) flavor from the usual (green cardamom) due to some sort of fermentation – might have to try an Indian specialty shop for that.
I love the usual kind, especially when combined with ginger.

I’m not as likely to do chicken, but I can see that it would work very well there.
If I had to make chicken any other way, and regardless if I use spices, I have this thing about using lots of onions on chicken. I wonder how onions and smoked paprika would combo up.

I use it as a substitute for black pepper….
But paprika is not my latest spice discovery – that honor goes to none other than cardamom – somewhere between cinnamon and nutmeg…I had used it earlier on Indian food…But recently, I cooked Russian cuisine for orthodox Easter.Kulich for which I utilized a saved recipe from 1978..The bread/sweet…[Read more]

Smoked paprika from Trader Joes. Mmmmm 😋 I use it on everything, but it’s especially good on chicken. I get boneless chicken thighs, sprinkle a little salt and pepper and a generous dollop of paprika. Pop on the oven in a Pyrex dish for 30+/- minutes. You can throw other veggies or mushrooms in the dish as well. Yummers.
Try it on fruit, too. W…[Read more]

I’ve even eaten at McDonalds in Ukraine and Russia. It also does taste better there – both countries have stricter rules on preservatives and food quality.

I remember when the first McDonald’s opened in my neighborhood. I had never eaten a McDonald’s burger before. We had a couple of other fast food burger joints in the neighborhood almost identical to McDonald’s. One family owned. The other a franchise called “Wetson’s”. When I ate my first McDonald’s burger, I didn’t like it. Unlike the other…[Read more]

Finding Russian Vodka in the forum Jackpine Radical Cooking 1 month ago
I tend to drink mostly at home. So, I have slowly been building up my bar tools (recently bought both a nice wooden muddler and a channel-knife for making citrus curls) and just need to get some martini glasses. Not that I’m a fan of the traditional martini, but some drinks are served in them, and I don’t have any smaller glasses for such…[Read more]

I always enjoy trying something different when I am out, but rarely do it at home.
Closest I have done is to make something similar to horilka – Ukrainian honey hot pepper vodka.
A bottle of Portland Hot Monkey vodka infused with about a cup of honey gives a real kiss and slap!
Makes me think of my bottle of Pervak in the cupboard in the flat…[Read more]

but I might need to decant it into smaller bottles because my freezer is packed. This will incentivize me to clear out the stuff I can’t eat right now (on a keto diet and I’m a vegetarian). I used to keep vodka in the freezer, but then I stopped buying it.
These days, I’m having fun learning new cocktails, thanks in part to learning more techn…[Read more]
