    Meet New York's next superstar.

    Gleyber Torres

Not only has Baseball America rated him as the top prospect in the Yankees farm system, but he is absolutely tearing it up in the Arizona Fall League, which is a kind of  baseball finishing school where major league teams send their very best prospects every year for extra seasoning before making the leap to MLB. He’s currently leading the AFL in Batting Average (.392), On Base Percentage (.516) and is second in OPS (1.182). In addition, Torres’ defense and maturity level is said to be well in advance of his 19 (soon to be 20) years.

Of course, only time will tell if he’ll ultimately be good enough to stick in the majors, let alone achieve the stardom he seems destined for at this still early stage. The Yanks already have an All-Star caliber SS in Didi Gregorius, who is coming off a career year both offensively and defensively. However, given Torres’ performance in the AFL, maturity level, and what all the scouts are saying about this kid, I think it’s safe to say that the Yankees long term prognosis at Shortstop hasn’t looked this good since 1994, when another 19-year-old SS prospect of theirs wowed both scouts and fans alike with his poise, maturity and skill in the AFL – Derek Jeter.

    1. Hope to see him the majors this season!

love what the Yanks did at the trade deadline this year.  If half these prospects come to fruition they will be a solid core for the future.
