Baseball! Football! Basketball! Hockey! College or Pro (oh yes, those other sports – soccer (football to non-US types), tennis, curling, badminton.
We’ve all got our teams, or favorites, our hot button issues. Let’s have some discussions, share opinions, and argue it out!
Super Bowl LI: Dallas vs. ????
Super Bowl LI: Dallas vs. ????
I’ve been watching NFL football since I was 3, and that was 55 years ago, so I like to think I know a little something about it. As it stands now, I think it likely that we are going to witness the return of the Dallas Cowboys to the big game, like it or not. In the NFC, there’s Dallas, and then there’s the rest of the conference.
It would seem that Tony Romo going down was the best thing that’s happened to the Cowboys since they drafted Roger Staubach before his stint in the Navy. A very good young QB, a beast of a running back from Ohio State, one hell of an offensive line, and a competent defense have to make them the NFC favorite.
The AFC is another story. It’s not replete with great teams this year, but it’s got a few very good ones. My thought is that their representative will be either New England or whatever team from the West that might be able to beat them, and there are three contenders there–the Raiders, the Chiefs, and the Broncos.
Yes, Kansas City is in the catbird seat for now, with a 10-2 record and the tiebreaker over the Raiders because they handed Oakland their only two losses of the season. Both the Chiefs and the Raiders have to play Denver again, so the Broncos can still make the playoffs and upset the applecart for one or both of their division rivals. Denver still has a very good defense, and their offense is well-coached and showing signs of more life of late.
I’m not making any predictions here, but it is quite possible that both AFC wild card teams will be from the West, and one of them will almost certainly play the division champ in a playoff game. And they all hate each other. Makes for great football, yes?
New England can still do it; they still have that wonderful evil genius for a head coach and a very solid team. Not to mention one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game. I’m not a Patriots fan, but hey! Tom Brady is great. Period.
I grew up a Cowboys fan in San Antonio, then moved to Denver. I went to Texas, so when Jerry Jones unceremoniously fired Tom Landry and replaced him with Barry Switzer…eeeew! Asking me to pull for a Switzer-coached team is like asking a Michigan fan of the same era to pull for a Woody Hayes-coached team. Besides, the Broncos were fun to watch, and I made friends with a season ticket holder and saw many live games at the old Mile High. Great stuff.
I wasn’t surprised when the Broncos clobbered Carolina last year, but I realistically don’t expect them to repeat this year. In fact, they have already exceeded my expectations with a practically rookie quarterback. Dallas has blown them through the roof. And I’m glad, really! to see that the Raiders are back. Football’s just more fun when the silver-and-black is once again wreaking havoc in the league.
So what do you think? Is it going to be Dallas vs. NE or the best of the West? Or am I full of shit? This is a sports forum, so I expect some fervent and irrational fans. I’m also curious to see what kind of sports fans are here.Enthusiast likes this"Identity politics is the last refuge of the politically incompetent." --Me, with a hat tip to Isaac Asimov
