The Wasp Network is now streaming on Netflix, which came as something as a surprise to me. How often do you see a Studiocanal/RT production on American TV?
I thought it was a very well done movie. Penelope Cruz and a highly talented Latino cast star in this true story of a Cuban spy ring in Miami that infiltrated anti-Castro terrorist groups which were using drug money to pay mercenaries and other Fascistic thugs to raid Cuba and bomb tourist resorts there in the 1990s in an effort to topple the Castro regime.
The CIA isn’t mentioned, but the anti-Castro Cubans are portrayed as the fanatical thugs they really are. The Cuban Intelligence people are all sympathetic characters portrayed as Cuban patriots, and they really did work in the service of their own country. The acting is good, and the plot is intriguing.
Perhaps the most surprising thing to me was how easily these Cuban exile groups were infiltrated; it seems they believed their own propaganda about how the Cuban people want to return to the good old days when the exiles or their ancestors ran the country and its casinos.
If you want a good intelligence agency story with very human characters, you’ll like this film.
