The federal gasoline tax is 18.4 cents per gallon and has not gone up since October 1993. Motorists demand more lanes on their freeways, but refuse to pay for it. If the Democrats had any balls, they would raise the gas tax and fix some highways. In this article, Mayor Pete dodges a question about the gas tax.

If we get a major conversion to electric and hybrid vehicles, we will impose some kind of road tax on them. The easiest way would be to collect an excise tax on each new vehicle, perhaps $1500 to $2000, which represents the approximate amount of fuel tax a gasoline powered car would pay over ten years. In the mean time, the fuel tax is the way we pay for roads and bridges. Trucks are mainly responsible for road damage, so they pay 25 cents a gallon in federal tax. They should probably pay about a dollar a gallon, since they pound the crap out of the highways.
