Land of Enchantment

  • @alcina

I caught only cats, but I was trapping in a suburban, residential neighborhood. I have very occasionally seen a skunk or an opossum in the area, but none visited my trap.

If you do trap an animal you don’t want, it’s no big deal. You never have to handle the prisoner. You just unlatch the door and lift it up. The animal, now free to…[Read more]

Thanks for the suggestion, Jim. Our local HD didn’t have that, but another store has some humane traps that I’ll go look at tomorrow. My only concern is that we might end up catching the possums or skunks or raccoons that frequent our yard at night. (We have a pond, and it brings all the critters to the yard.) But if I put it out in the…[Read more]

Thanks for the warning. I just looked up this disease and it’s pretty scary. There appears to be a vaccine, but it’s kind of like the Covid vaccines — doesn’t necessarily prevent infection.

The little visitor did not come by today. Poor Casey sat by the fence for most of the day waiting for it. If it’s truly a feral…[Read more]

  • @alcina Don’t want to be alarmist, but Feline Leukemia killed 2 of my cats. When I lived in a semi rural area, I had 2, 10-12 year old cats who were indoor/outdoor cats although they spent most of their time indoors.  One of the two cats came along with the house, and was originally a stray farm cat who the previous owner adopted and became a…[Read more]

If you want to take your visitor to the vet but you’re having trouble effecting the catch, I can recommend the humane traps from Havahart. The company sells online but I got mine at Home Depot.

You bait it with food. The cat, in walking toward the food, steps on a plate that causes the door to swing shut, a couple feet behind the…[Read more]

Now her royal highness HRC has weighed in for her good friend Justin, and Bernie has endorsed the more progressive candidate. IIRC Obama also endorsed Macron during France’s elections.  No wonder the US has become such a shithole country: Always sticking its nose in other people’s business instead of fixing its own problems.

    Bernie Sanders,…[Read more]

  • Feline leukemia is contagious.  You and your Casey have been gifted. Be careful. Take the new baby to a vet. Happiness and joy to all 3 of you!!

I remember local elections in Texas where ballots were much as you described. They also had voting machines in some elections, where you went into a booth, closed the curtain, and then pulled levers. You could even go back and change your vote before you pulled the big lever which submitted the tally. Not as good as your system, but better than…[Read more]

It was election day. They went down the street to vote. I tagged along.

It surprised me that they were voting the old fashioned way — pencil and paper then placing it in a box. We went back to the polls later to see the results. Like you said, they counted the votes manually, by hand.

As the US elections became more computer high-tech, the more…[Read more]

Thank you for the information. Of the cat sounds, the first one sounds very much like Casey; and the 3rd one sounds so much like the other cat that Casey came running in from outside to find out what was going on. I played the video again, and he showed no interest in the other sounds.

The other cat appears to be either a…[Read more]

  • Seems like they’re getting along. Sounds like they are just establishing a relationship.

  • And even if Casey is neutered, he might just like having company.  But, really, taking the cat to the vet is the only way to see if it is healthy.  Sounds like it won’t stay confined to your back yard, either, although if it is feral it might stick around for food and affection.

Here is a youtube of cats in heat  sounds – brought my dog right in…[Read more]

Yes, it truly is a wonderful system, and Elections Canada has recently stated they have no plans to change it.

I was a poll observer 2 elections past, and I was pretty impressed by how well run it was. It was in a large riding, and this polling station served more people than most (or so I was told). When you come in, you show the voting card…[Read more]

  • We used to have 2 cats — Casey and Tiger — but sadly, Tiger died a few years ago at the age of 20 or so. His little brother from another mother, Casey, is now 15 and had never known another cat. About 3 weeks ago, a stray cat that has the exact same colouring as Tiger, though less furry, started coming to the fence. We’ve completely fenced in…[Read more]

Are they hand-counted, too? We don’t have that in the States. Everything is scanned electronically at some step in the process, and any electronic scanner or tabulator can be tampered with. That is why I have no faith in the integrity of American elections.

Seriously. The guy creeps me out.

As for voting, my partner and I did it last Saturday at 8:30 pm. Walked over to the Finnish Agricultural Church down the block, was checked in by the old guy with the thick accent, handed a ballot by the middle-aged extremely blonde woman with an accent, and enjoyed a few minutes of laughter at my expense because…[Read more]
