“By tradition, the name is originally in reference to the sanctuary in France in which the miraculous cape of St. Martin of Tours, patron saint of France, was preserved.”

So are cap, cape, chapeau, captain, decapitate, and chapel!

RufusTFirefly replied to the topic Trump Riot Watch Party in the forum General Discussion 1 week ago
Still disgusting, but calling it a “Trump Riot Watch Party” would seem to be a mischaracterization if not an outright distortion.
Call me naive, but I had hoped we were the ones with facts on our side.

Reminds me of the time that Grover Norquist was a guest on “Fresh Air” and compared the estate tax to the Holocaust.

According to Mr. [Wayne] Barrett’s book [“Rudy!”], in 1934, a decade before the mayor’s birth, Harold Giuliani, with an accomplice, pulled a gun on a milkman in a Manhattan building, robbed him of $128.82, and gave a false name to the police when he was arrested. He served a year and a half at Sing…

RufusTFirefly replied to the topic Some among America's military allies believe Trump deliberately attempted a coup and may have had help from federal law-enforcement officials in the forum General Discussion 1 week ago
As with that one (which happened in a September, not quite 20 years ago), no one could’ve predicted it. No one saw it coming. They were caught flat-footed.
(Do I have to add a sarcasm thingie?)

… the transition is immediate.
One of the great dangers of Trump is that he doesn’t realize he’s deluded. (Deluded people seldom do).

As reported on PBS
The National Association of Manufacturers is an historically right-wing organization.
Yet they are calling on Pence to organize cabinet members to remove Trump from office as per the 25th Amendment.

In the old days, I used to download these and then save the audio as an MP3. I know what Bolton and Varoufakis look like. I don’t need to watch them while they debate.

I’m a big Kinzer fan and have read all but one of his books, I believe.
He’s a solid member of the Santayana school of history.
Or as Faulkner put it, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

What’s the incentive of having a reliable, ad-free, government-run site when the alternative will bombard users with unwanted advertising, violate their privacy, and make a few companies a bundle?
It’s similar to the disincentive for insuring the safety of municipal water supplies. What? And put big bottled water companies out of business? No…[Read more]

One of the gifts that Trump keeps on giving is the discrediting of legitimate terms that he has adopted for his own paranoid purposes. The concept of the Deep State is a good example. The term has been around for decades.
In 2014, Bill Moyers interviewed Mike Lofgren on the topic of the Deep State. More recently, John Light, a reporter/producer…[Read more]

Despots and dictators live in palaces or mansions. Our leaders live in the White House, which technically qualifies as either or both.
Likewise, this is why MSNBC Democrats had to use the word collusion instead of conspiracy. They’ve spent decades discrediting the latter term (even though it has a legitimate legal basis) and were forced to use the former.
