You write:
@jimlane, the “floor” of 5,000 rubles per gram would become relevant if others were selling gold for less than 5,000 rubles – that’s why it’s a floor.
Yes, it’s a floor on the price of gold, expressed in rubles. But that does nothing to shield the ruble from devaluation.
You go on to write:
It seems to me that such a floor would…

Jim Lane replied to the topic How a new ‘gold ruble’ could shake the world financial system in the forum Multimedia 9 months ago
There’s still no answer to what @snot and I said in the other thread (link): The Bank of Russia is offering to exchange rubles for gold, but the ruble doesn’t become a gold-backed currency unless the BoR offers to sell gold for rubles, which it hasn’t done.
The video tries to obfuscate this crucial difference by confusing wording – tha…[Read more]

I think @snot had it right: To back the ruble with gold, the Russians would have to offer to exchange gold for rubles, not the other way around.
The math in your example is correct except for what I assume is a typo. You write, “Multiplying it out, we can see that your ounce of gold will buy 5169 rubles today, so only getting 5000 is n…[Read more]

See what @snot posted – it’s good background at https://jackpineradicals.com/boards/topic/helpful-more-balanced-summary-re-ukraine/ .
I’d also suggest that while the US may call it “Russian aggression” my wife calls it a civil war, just like the civil war in the US. She lives in Ukraine not far from Donbass in central Ukraine.

That is a great quote. I’d not heard of UNEF, but searching for it led me to the entire article on the Anarchist Library. Thank you.

This was a lovely thread. What resonated with me is the thread opener by @alcina, and thoughts by @snot and @voltairine, and really everybody. Not many words wasted.

While fleshing out my rant, I ran it past my partner for a reality check; and he asked me a few questions, the answers to which were almost identical to yours. Great minds, eh? 😉

GPT 3 models have the ability to “kind of” learn, but their process is flawed. They can pick up things about their user using predictive algorithms and such – and some times those algorithms guess right. But they are guesses
For example, one might say, randomly during conversation: “I saw you at the hospital and waved, but you s…[Read more]

Thats what happens when the only leadership you have is cowardly, incompetent and hopelessly corrupt. People fight among themselves…. For a while. Eventually that anger and fear that the politicians have stirred will turn on them.
It won’t be pretty.

@snot.
You can’t force lockdown compliance without draconian measures. The only countries that really managed it have social cultures that value social cooperation for the good of the many.Going back to pre-pandemic ‘normal’ is not a good idea (my town, Las Vegas, is going to find that out in the fall. Nevada is opening up fully June 1st). We…[Read more]
