Spud Demon replied to the topic Kremlin tells United States to await response to "economic war" in the forum Latest Breaking News 2 months ago
When animal rights activists were stealing “abused” animals, Big Ag was calling it “economic terrorism”, even though there were no deaths or injuries.
Calling sanctions “economic war” is close to that. If this kind of action replaces shooting wars, the world will be better off.

These Russian protesters are taking a huge risk, compared to people like me who do so here.

Spud Demon replied to the topic Could this be good for Ukraine? in the forum General Discussion 2 months ago
Zelensky is Jewish, and members of his family were killed in WW2. Yet he was democratically elected in Ukraine.
Putin’s claim that he is de-Nazifying Ukraine by fighting Zelensky’s government is unmitigated bullshit.

Even if it’s largely symbolic because it’s only federal prisoners, it’s still good leadership. Private prisons are awful.
And in the courts, the refusal to consider Merrick Garland (who was a compromise nom anyway) cannot go unanswered. Pack them!
Impeach Clarence Thomas!
Make DC a state!

I heard (unverified) that Virginia Lamp Thomas (wife of Clarence Thomas) funded 70 busses to bring the “protesters” to DC.

I know enough electronics to recognize that’s a mnemonic for the order of the colors, but it sounds awfully racist.

I’m definitely not giving to the PAC. I think we can work with resisters on some of our goals but not others, once Biden takes office.
Yes: BLM, pro-choice
No: War, meaningful socialism

I see a lot of people on Twitter who self-identify as resisters. They talk about standing together with other resisters, but I can’t figure out for what. Anybody know?

Tonight, Pelosi introduced “legislation” (just a resolution really) calling on Mike Pence to take care of the problem. He won’t, but since some GOP objected to unanimous consent, they are going to spend tomorrow (Tuesday) debating this meaningless, non-binding resolution.
Tuesday night, they will probably pass the resolution, which says they…[Read more]

Spud Demon replied to the topic Assange extradition decision a huge relief; US must now end prosecution (Australian journalists' association) in the forum Latest Breaking News 1 year ago
The rationale for denying extradition was that Assange might kill himself if he is extradited and tried. This is a less helpful outcome than I was hoping for. It’s sort of like “compassionate release” except it leaves everything incomplete.
I think he should not be extradited to the US because he was neither a citizen of nor present in the US…[Read more]

Spud Demon replied to the topic Operation Warp Speed at a crawl: Adequately vaccinating Americans will take 10 years at current pace in the forum Latest Breaking News 1 year ago
@djean111 Yes, from what the media is saying, there is no reason to think the newly discovered Covid strain which spreads faster is vaccine-resistant too.
The flu vaccine hype, though — I’ve seen messaging saying it’s especially important to get the flu vaccine this year. Why? It seems like the Covid precautions we’re all taking should be s…[Read more]

11.5 million doses have been delivered to the government. Only 2 million have been administered.
The Trump administration’s Covid-19 vaccine distribution program needs a major shot in the arm because at the current rate, it would take almost 10 years to inoculate enough Americans to get the pandemic under control, a jarring new NBC News a…

Spud Demon replied to the topic U.S. Electoral College formally confirms Joe Biden's victory over Trump in the forum Latest Breaking News 1 year ago
Submitting fraudulent electoral votes is potentially much higher impact than a fraudulent citizen’s vote. It is important to demonstrate that fraud isn’t taken lightly, or we’ll slip into:
- Losing side makes accusations of fraud
- Winning side ignores them
- Losers attempt to outdo the perceived fraud until they win.
- Lather, rinse, and…

@djean111 Obama’s nonviolent clemency effort may have been incomplete, but it was not bullshit. He commuted hundreds of bad sentences.
I do agree that Clinton perfected the art of pardoning rich folks for money.

Why more people are atheists. in the forum Atheist/Humanist/Non-Religious 1 year ago
People saw hypocrisy in the RCC long before abortion became an issue, I think. They adjusted, while keeping their Christian identity, by forming other sects.
Embracing atheism in a theist society is more than rejecting one organization or even all organized religion. It’s about having the courage to reject their God, the threat of Hell, and t…[Read more]
